Apply for that credit card (unless you're too paranoid to give a bank your personal details) and just request a low limit and only use that card number for online purchases. It is mostly unnecessary though, because in [almost] all circumstances the onus is on the merchant to prove that a transaction they have billed to your card is valid, in [almost] all circumstances of genuine fraud you are only liable for the first $50 and in [almost] all circumstances the bank will waive the $50 liability.
