please pardon the lack of caps but i am typing this with my non-dominant
hand while the other one watches from inside a fiberglass cast.

subject: sat am ride to bovine bakery for coffee and pastry interrupted

    details
location: marin county ca, route 1 north of bolinas, northbound at 50-60 mph

event: large buck deer leaps from behind foliage at right shoulder of
    road directly into my bike.
impact separates me from vtr, several seconds of asphalt bouncing
ensues, ending in ditch on right shoulder, 75 yards north of impact site.
    first thought: ouch
    second thought: ouch
bike is visible cross highway, looks all messed up.
i do brief physical evaluation and decide to cross road and see if i can
    walk or stand
i can and get to bike and flip off ignition before blacking out

first person on scene nice lady m.d. who begins triage
    sheriff and emts arrive next
sheriff reports large (175+lbs) deer dead on road, will send photos
    wednesday
    20 mins of evaluation ensues
wrist is obviously not right, feet are killing me
    no helicopter necessary
we negotiate the removal of my beloved aerostich without killing it
helmet off without wrecking my ears
onto a back board, taped up with various collar things
arrival at marin general after long trip over mt tam
morphine requested on arrival, and dispensed liberally
    physical inventory: dislocated/broken ulna-wrist
    fractured metatarsals both feet
various bruises from bouncy flight down highway 1
zero road rash, no cuts anywhere , i am frankly amazed at how the
helmet, suit, gloves and boots saved my hide and head.
i notice an acquired dislike of antlerred wildlife
i endure surrealistic interview with strange chp officer but convince
him to note that it was not my fault.this actually required some effort,
believe it or not. as if i intended to poach a deer with my vtr.

at 130 am i am released from kaiser surgical unit to my beloved, who was
at my side as the day progressed
all my thanks to marin sheriff, emts, hospital staff, doctors and my
wife for understanding that i will be riding again as soon as i am able.
special thanks to deer hunters everywhere.

  3. DANG! Glad to hear you're relatively okay, Jim. Although the
dislocated wrist sounds awful. At least you dispatched the deer! A
big 'un, too. Heal well and quickly.

They're cute, and I hate them.
Good thing you had the dead deer as evidence. The only time I was involved
in an off-bike incident on public roads, the WSP officer refused to note on
his report that there was an oily spot where I lost traction in the turn.
    Bastard.
Good for you, Jim. Heal well and quickly.
Yep. Bring back the wolves, I say. The predator-prey equation is way out of
balance as far as deer are concerned. They're vermin of the forest.

Another freakin Deer injury! Man I hate those varmints. I hope you
recover quickly Jim. For going 50-60mph it sure could have been worse.
I hesitate to use the dreaded words "you were lucky" though. Doesn't
    seem lucky to me!

  8. Geez !! Sorry to hear of your misfortune. Glad you're not
    worse off.

I suggest one quarter of an aspirin tablet washed down with a large
glass of single malt scotch. Repeat as seems appropriate.

Hope you and the bike are back on the road soon.

    hey Jim -

wishing you a speedy, complete recovery.

As painful as it is, it *could* have been much worse, always. I mean, think
about what hapened to the deer. And the phsyics at 60mph when it comes to a
100lbs+ slab of meat and bones are unpredictable. I know some people emerge
from stuff like this well enough, but you're about median, and if fate told
me that one day I *have* to ride into a deer at 60mph to pay my dues to the
deities of motorcycling -who seem Aztec Gods or something- I think I'd sign
    the dotted line myself...

    Take good care of yourself...

Hey, way better than typing in 'CAPS'........'Get well soon'.

Hopefully, the bike is repairable and you don't get dicked around by
your insurance company ('act of God exclusion...').

Was any of the venison recoverable?......sweet revenge to eat the thing
    that put you in pain!

Sorry to hear you've joined the club, Jim but damned glad you survived.
Like Andrew said, an 8% survival rate ain't too good but there are at
least three here in that 8%tile. Four with Gary J.

    Here's to a speedy recovery.
