OK so what's the current recommendation? Maybe you got one for
christmas? I have the ex-Timo Medion MDPNA100 but would like to get one
now that is designed for the bike. Sticking it inside a Tesco sandwich
    bag is decidedly sub-optimal....

What he said, brilliant and it comes with the mounts for bike and cage.

    Seconded.

The Zumo forum is full of rumours about a 660 being imminent, but I've
no idea if there's anything to them.

And before the Zumo 550...? As they appear to be just shy of £400 I'd
be looking perhaps for its predecessor (or whatever was top dog say 18
    months ago) on ebay.

I've been using a Tomtom Rider V1 for a few years. Navigation is quick
and accurate and the route recalculation times are good. Unfortunately
the mounting system is of poor design causing wear between the unit
and the cradle. In my case this led to the unit continually switching
itself off and on again when on the move as electrical contact was
broken and remade. The bracket was replaced under warranty and it's
been fine since. I've a feeling the design of the replacement is
slightly different but couldn't swear to it. Also, the in-helmet
speakers aren't very robust but (I think) these can be substituted for
    an after-market bluetooth unit.

So in summary, if you can find a cheap one on ebay it might be worth a
go if you're desperate to save money, but a new Rider V2 (which solved
most of the problems of the original) or the Zumo would be a more
    reliable bet.

Garmin 2610. I bought one when they sold the last of the new ones in £199
bundles. Fitted to my bike with a RAM mount.

It works very well IMV. No postcode search but it will find streets. The
accompanying software for the PC, Mapsource is very good. You can get all
of mainland Europe on a single 2 Gb CF card. It did a very good job of
finding my hotels on last year's trip to the Alps and navigated me through
London to a training course venue. That's in "find A from current position
    mode".

It's not as good as the newer models for pre-programmed routes. If you are
forced to deviate from the route, by roadworks or if the mapping gets a one
way street wrong, then it gets it's knickers in a twist. I generally ignore
it and start following road signs as I've a pretty good sense of where I'm
    aiming for anyway.

As long as you use it as a navigational aid rather than expecting it to
baby you everywhere then it is a very good tool.

You could go for an upmarket sandwich bag, an aquapac for gps comes in
    around the £20 mark.

Actually I looked at these originally and (at the time at least - 2 or 3
years ago) there was nothing of the right size and IIRC were quite
pricy. Either that or they couldn't be easily mounted to the bike. Or
    something.

Thanks for the offer, I'll have a look at the spec. Does it have RAM
mounts? I already have the ball and socket parts.

No RAM mount - it has a bracket which bolts to a crossbar type thing
but you can remove that leaving a flat surface with 4 bolt holes to
    mount it to something else.
    Its got V8 Europe maps.

Fleet so easy to take a look. I'll do some research and get back to you.

I use a phone-inna-pocket[1] (or a tank bag) with an Autocom headset. It
lacks a lot of features that the rider/Zumo have for sure, but it does
do the basic stuff which is good enough for me.
