You need about 150 degf for an egg to coagulate

No surprises there then. But at 55degC AT and in the full tropical sun
I'd be fairly sure the deck was easily hot enough.
    You're not wrong.

  3. A chef managed to fry an egg on her (black) car yesterday in
    Bournemouth, it appears.

She either tipped her car backwards or has found a set of anti-gravity
    eggs.

  6. Mebbe she didn't grease the bonnet and the egg stuck (after she'd held
it in place with her spatula)

  7. Ah, that's where our funny little trains win. Nothing plays out before
05:00 - first bookon of the day is 04:45.

Didn't have much choice. There was the third mate, me (cadet) and the
bosun, up on the focsle ready to drop anchor. Every half hour one of
use would walk back to the accomodation block and fetch wet hand
towels (worn out the back of the hat, Foreign legion stylee), cold
drinks and a handful of salt tablets each. We would take it in turns
to stand in the one square foot of shaded deck next to the foremast.

    Ahh, happy days...

During a break from Gulf Patrol, the ship I was on sailed to somewhere
they called "The Gates Of Hell". I'm not sure where it was, but it was
supposedly hotter than Death Valley. Just an inlet with nice flat
    reflective rock sides.

One of the officers cracked an egg on the deck, and it did cook. He
left it to a rating to clear up the mess.

  12. Could you not have used a sunshade of some sort? Or would the use of a
golf umbrella (for example) be frowned upon? Iwht that such conditions
would have led to a slight relaxing of Captain's Rules or whatever.

Typical woman, not greasing the bonnet like that. No consideration.

I remember it well - I was in Belgium laying a concrete base for my SiL

it hit 40 degrees over there

That was a lot of Jupiler

  15. Bleedin' sounds like it. I can imagine the response of some young wan
being told now to go and fry their feet for 6 hours.

Well I guess so, but oddly, we didn't have one to hand. Rigging up an
awning might have been possible, but would have been a lot of work
(especially to ensure it was restricting neither our view of the
bridge and the surrounding water nor access to any of the
    winches/windlasses etc.)

What sort of twisted brain would imagine that as part of your kit for
a five-month stint at sea you'd pack a fucking golf umbrella?

No problem with rules - I don't think the soaked ripped-in-half hand
towels dangling from the back of our hard hats were actually in the
    rules, wither.
"**** you" "you're fired" would tend to weed out certain types quite
    quickly.

    Laziness.

All she'd have had to do was sit on the bonnet for a few seconds.

  20. I was going to suggest a parasol, but the image of rufty-tufty sailors
sheltering under a pink frilly umbrella didn't quite fit.
**** knows. Somebody might fancy a stint of driving practice or might
even be prepared for a stint on the foredeck in broiling heat, for
    example.
