Scottoilers rock!

    I've always been a fan, both of the principle and the practice - the RF
    came to me with one fitted and I never missed oiling the bloody chain,
    you know. Equally, I didn't miss adjusting it and although I kept a
    regular eye on it, never had to do a thing to it. Haven't used it for
    years, it sits outside all the time and the chain still isn't rusty.

    But I'd never fitted a whole one - not end to end, start to finish,
    like. Well I have now.

    Yesterday the Bandit's chain was 'orrible: black and sticky with links
    sitting at odd angles along the bottom run ... not due to corrosion,
    but to the stickiness of the chain lube I threw at it regularly. Now
    after less than 50 miles with its new Scottoiler, the chain is
    gold(ish) again, but the rollers are grey and shiny, not black and
    dull. Not only that, there was a deep thrum at urban speeds, which
    seems to have disappeared - could that have been the chain grumbling at
    me?

    Fitting it wasn't the breeze that they'd have you think, but it wasn't
    difficult: I made it more difficult for myself by fabricating a bracket
    from thick ally plate to support the big reservoir that sits behind the
    numberplate, as there wasn't enough mudguard surviving after the PO
    made it prettier. I did dick around like a twat making a bracket for
    the dispenser, as I wanted the whole thing to disppear as much as
    possible so it was worth putting some time in to the installation to
    acheive the anti-dwb look.

    I'm well pleased.

    change quite soon, so this'll fit in just right.

    Like a lot of things, the second one you fit - to the same bike - will
    be quicker. A bit like sex, it's one of those things where you spend
    ages offering it up in different positions until you find somewhere
    where it's just right.

    Of course, as soon as you've finished, you'll see somewhere where you
    think it might have been an even better fit.

    One of the neatest installations I've seen was on a mate's ZXR750, where
    is was mounted in the front fairing; easy to get to and even turn up and
    downable on the go if it started (or stopped) raining.

    Yes I think they're great too... some thoughts...

    I've got one on my CBR1000f.. the sprockets out lasted the last
    chain.If it's making a racket it's probably because the chain has
    tight spots. Try rotating the wheel with the chain really tight and
    see if there are places where it gets stuck, that's how mine went
    after about a million miles or so... time to replace the lot then ;-)

    I bought a Scotoiler to go on my Blackbird as well, however I have
    never got around to fitting it ! I've also got a standard cog set
    waiting to replace the up-geared one that's on there, and I might do
    both jobs at the same time. I'm not sure O rings chains really need
    more than the lightest whiff of grease once in a while, just to keep
    the rubber from cracking and lube the sprockets. Depends on mileage
    and whether you run in the rain really I think.

    PS You only need the slightest drip you know.. should be barely
    noticeable unless you want your rear wheel covered in oil and shite!

  5. Got one on my Zed, not as easy to fit as you might think, as Pip says,
    but worth it. I'll show you in France.

    Heh. Not so difficult with the big reservoir, as it goes behind the
    numberplate and that's it, unless one wishes to get particularly (and
    prolly pointlessly) devious. Fewer options are better, sometimes:
    straight missionary or nothing.
    Just like sex again, then. "I wonder if it would fit in there?"
    "Don't even think of /that/, Buster!"
    That's beyond keen. If it can't wait for the next fuel stop on a B12,
    it isn't worth worrying about. I'm sure the chain will be carrying
    enough lube for 100 miles in any conditions. Of course, I'll have to
    try and reach mine, now you've put it into my head.

    So, does the big reservoir fill the little reservoir or does it do it
    all in one?

  12. Fitted one to the FJ12 when I was going to the Bol d'Or each year, that
    was when it was at the Paul Ricard Circuit. Superb device.

    Haven't been since it moved to Magny-Cours.

    No, there's no tight spots, I've checked. The chain needed a good
    clean though, as chain lube had built up and gone sticky (and formed
    grinding paste), so the chain wasn't running straight along the bottom
    run, for example. I set the Scottoiler high deliberately, to run some
    oil through the chain and get rid of the old lube, which is has done
    admirably and in a labour-free manner.
    I know how to set one up. It's now producing a drip every 45 seconds,
    set back to #2 from #7 (which was producing a drip every 20 seconds).
    I will keep an eye on it, as I don't want the back of the bike covered
    in Jockish oil. A well set up installation should be next to invisible
    in all ways, IMO - no pipes or bottles visible, no oil sprayed around
    the wheel/tyre/numberplate.

    I do like my chain to have a film of oil on the rollers, though.
