Well, today was very wet and very dry in equal measure.

Wet as it tipped down as I tried to work on the Jag so dodging between
heavy showers prolonged the job but the end result was a very dry bearing.

I mean no grease at all. I cleaned up one of the races and it span quite
freely - I may have even got away with re-packing them with grease....

It's lunched the spacer so the end float is all over the shop so that
needs replacing but I can drop the hub, bearings and UJ in a couple of
    hours to set it.

UJ was fine but hub spacers and shims were fucked. It's a bit of an
involved job to set the end float accurately but parts are cheap(ish).
Damaged bit in the picture is £25 and the shim/spacer is £6. Just need
to calculate the size I need.

Oddly, the other side had grease but will get a strip and clean.

So, you were right : it was the wheel bearing.

oic, I thought that was a random Jag.

  4. Not entirely unknown to find that some previous twonk has fitted a
bearing with minimal grease. Of course, the seal could have been letting
in the rain, which certainly doesn't help much.

They have been - I didn't take pictures of the rebuilt hub because I
    forgot.

I'm going to have to do it all again because the end float is fucked but
at least I can move it between garage and workshop without the fear it's
    going to explode.

The seals were in good condition.

  6. Indeed so. Once it's run dry I wouldn't trust it any more, especially as
it has an unknown life elapsed. Re-greasing in those circumstances would
only be an option for the final trip to the breaker or a purely show car
which only travels on and off a trailer.
