    Who the **** pays for this shite?

    I'll bet leg protecting crash bars/fairings, standard fit ABS and a decent
    CE test for tyres on bikes would make more difference than any of that
    shite.
    Add a mandatory eye test every 2 years for all cage licences and Bob's you
    Auntie.

    Leg protectors don't work, and have been proven not to work.
    ABS is for people who don't know how to brake.
    Bike tyres are already far superior than 99% of riders.

    Crash bars/K1100LT fairing work *very* nicely protecting knees and ankles
    while falling over at lights. Or carelessly filtering. Apparently. So I'm
    told.

    Most people on bikes don't know how to brake (1). Ergo...

    There are some *woeful* bike tyres on the market. Particularly when
    cold/damp

    (1) and even people who do get caught out by the unexpected on cold damp
    roads when the High School girls are demobbing. Apparently. So I'm told.

    I bet it thinks the speed you 'should' be going is considerably slower
    than the speed you'd actually want to be going. Once you'd worked out
    what the margin of error was you could just add 20mph or whatever to the
    suggested speed.

    Reminds me of an acquaintance who thought that he could get round the
    bend by the devil's punchbowl at hindhead at 70 on a cx500. The bike
    hit the crash barrier and bounced off but he somehow ended up astride
    the barrier for a bit. Apparently the bruising on his bollocks took
    sometime to go down. I did go back on my then t140v and see how fat I
    could get round myself but made several passes starting at around 50
    and working up. Never did get up to 70 so still don't know if it's
    possible.

    I quite like the crash bars on BMWs and some cruisers, but that's purely
    for low speed or nearly stationary falling over events.

    I'd be quite interested in some links or reference to the proof, rather
    than anecdotal evidence. Just morbid curiosity, haven't visited the gore
    gallery for at least 10 years.

    I've told the story on here before and Alex and Dr Zoidberg might
    remember it. The posted limit was 30mph and there used to be a layby
    just past it. On summer Sundays an ice cream van would park there and be
    joined by numerous 'spectator'. Bold local lads would go off back to
    Stourton, turn round and proceed towards Bridgnorth attempting to do the
    '60 bend' at, well, 60. After the inevitable comings to grief and the
    crowd getting ever larger the highway authority eventually removed the
    layby.

  19. I remember writing something very similar in Superbike, nearly 30 years
    ago, and Tony Middlehurst (the then editor) added "Nothing to do with
    me" in italics after it.

    It's still a good rule of thumb.

    Doctor and I went around four or five French motorcycle factories.
