Anyone have any experience of it?
What do insurers make of it?
I seem to be entirely entitled to invoke it at my own risk of being
prosecuted if someone else decides that I wasn't really allowed to drive.

Or, is it just too cold to consider riding, and I should stay huddled on
    the tube till spring?

    googling
    http://www.drinkdriving.org/drink_driving_information_DVLA_medical.php
    gives me...

"Can I drive while awaiting a decision from the DVLA?

Section 88 of The Road Traffic Act 1988 allows drivers to legally
drive if they are not currently subject to a driving disqualification
and a qualifying drivers licence application has been received by the
    DVLA.

Because the DVLA are unable to make a licensing decision until all
available and relevant medical information has been considered,
drivers usually retain legal entitlement to drive under section 88 of
The Road Traffic Act 1988 while their fitness to drive is being
    determined.

Where a driving licence has been revoked previously for medical
reasons then Section 88 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 entitlement does
not apply. It may also not apply under certain other circumstances. "

so it depends on why your licence was revoked.

Seems like I've got between all the cracks.
I was a voluntary surrender on the basis of no real evidence at all.
Since then medical investigations returned 'fault not found', so many
many things are ruled out. It's 6 months since my last 'event' so I'm
entirely clear on their flowchart of fail.
I do have an application in with the DVLA, but they're waiting for a
letter (for a month now) from the specialist who didn't find a fault. I
have no idea what's written in that letter.

I currently have no insurance since it lapsed, so I have a conversation
to have with someone to get back on the road. That's the bit that's most
likely to bite me, I'm not sure if I even have to declare all this in
    the future or not.
