Selling a bike at this time of the year

When I visited work today to pick up something a colleague said he was
trying to sell his '86 Suzuki GSXR750 "streetfighter." I've told him
that it's probably a bad time of the year to sell the bike, but he
    insists it must go.

    It received no bids.

Is there anything wrong with that listing? I'm seeing him on Monday
and am wondering if I should advise him to do anything else, apart
from lock it away until March or April and then have a go at flogging
    it then.

    Thanks.

    £1800 starting bid on a D reg?

Start bidding low and put a reserve on it.

Especially when they admit that it doesn't even work properly.... " However,
needs attention as backfires on tick-over. Possibly just running a bit
rich" reads just like those ads that most people avoid like the plague - if
it is a genuine simple problem then fix it *then* sell it.

    bad form etc etc etc...

Also your mate has bugger all feedback from buyers - all his positives are
from sellers, just the sort of thing that Watchdog(or some similar
'consumer' show) told people to avoid this week when reporting on that Welsh
kid who scammed tens of thousands off people who thought he could be trusted
just cos he had +ve feedback....

    Several things:

    1) The advert Title does not state that it is a GSXR750 (Essential)
    2) The information section needs to be spaced out, written as a list of good
points and use bigger and varied font to catch the eye.
    3) "Some history available" should be a list of what history there is.
    4) Get the back fire MENDED. If it is "Just running a bit rich" then get it
fixed. No-one is gonna buy a bike that may be knackered.
    5) Advertised elsewhere so reserve the right to cancel will stop LOADS of
bidders. It's too often an excuse to just cancel an advert last minnute.
    6) Start at 99p and put a reserve on it, NEVER start at a high amount. Get
people interested, get low bids flowing, get them to bid each other up. Once
someone bids then send them texts with extra pics, get them to fall in love
with the bike, then they'll bid up against other users.

The starting bid? I have no real understanding of the 750 streetfighter
market but 1800 looks more like an optimistic target to finish at for a
20 year old bike. Even if it hasn't turned a wheel, as the mileage
    given tends to suggest.

Obviously don't do this or use loads of different colours for the text
because it'll look like it's written by a 5-year old.

Shame. I was going to say it's fucked and offer them twenty quid.

Yeah. If it's so simple to sort, why hasn't he? IMO anything like this
that has a "probably just" attached to it is going to be expensive and
    the seller knows it.

That's actually a nice looking bike. There are a lot of really shite
    ones around.

For something that age and price I don't think the winter will make
much difference to the price, it just may not sell at all.

For something like mine, it seems to be making about £750-1000
difference to the price at the moment, so I'll probably put it up for
    sale in the spring.

Quite, my local paper had a ZX6R on a P[1] plate for £1500 this week.

[1] Might have been an R, I wasn't paying attention.
