My first question isn't technical, it's "why?"

I use hosted Exchange services. If you have a few colleagues who insist on
Exchange, running a server just isn't worth the shagging hassle. Cobweb or
    SMS would do.

They're different types of entries in the DNS. So when something looks up
wibblypants.com rather than getting the name of the webserver (for
example), it can ask for the MX record and get the address of the mail
    server instead.

PS Do you ever look at your google mail?

You've pretty much described me when I started my first job as the sole
    technical bloke at an ISP.

I got better. Not much though.

He's pretty much described Sky's tech support too. The reply I got this
morning from the complaints department was a classic. E.g. "more than
10 netstat entries mean you may have a virus or spyware". I kid you not.

Shouldn't the next four also be "why?"

  7. Hardly ever because it only gets spam and google mail filters all of it
out. I have however just replied to your message.

    Any old-ish laptop running Linux.
Nice low power consumption for 24/7 operation, built in UPS, more that
    enough power for a mailserver.

Mine is a 10 year old Dell Inspiron.

You should probably find some real, professional geeks. I thought I was
    good.

    But you're mostly right :)

A cheap PC with a Linux flavour and a 24/7 ADSL connection will do the
job. The most expensive bit is tha ADSL connection.

No chance, I'd rather remain an Architect, that way I can ask why just
the once, then spend the rest of my time drawing magical clouds.

    I don't believe a word of it.

They might insist on the domain being delegated to their nameservers.
They might try and insist on the domain to be transferred to them for
renewal management. But there's no way any sane company would insist on
ownership of the domain being transferred to them before they'll provide
    a basic email service.

Try talking to them again without the crossed wires.
