I'd say I should move to a more pikey area, but they are in Watford. *boggle*

    - What with the Internet, it doesn't take long to feel like one is an
    - expert on any subject these days.

The OP implies he needs not too much really.
So which is easier for the first ever chain change? With or without?
errrrr. I'll get my coat..... Nige? You coming? :)

What makes you or Nige think the chain needs changing?
How so? They were making chains and selling them to the public LONG before a
"specialist" chain joining tool was available. Granted, it's *easier* with a
riveter, but it's far from being a "no chance without" deal. 2 hammers, one
punch and three hands is all it needs.
The bike had a full service 1000 miles ago, so how much more servicing does
it need for a few days on the road? Fucking none.

How's the battery? If it was on trickle charge it should be OK.
Battries don't like getting being deep discharged.

See, there's a thing. I've recently had a couple of bikes resurrected
after sitting for a couple of years. Neither of them had been trickle
charged, but neither had any load applied, either. No alarms or
anything like that, so the batteries just went down very gradually, I'd
guess. 24 hours on a 4 amp (max) charger and they're both fine, even
under duress when it takes a few cranks to get them to go for various
    reasons.

A proper deep discharge when a load is applied permanently is a
different matter, I'll grant you - but there's no reason to assume that
a battery would be dead just because it had been left to flatten for a
    while.

I get the equivalent of a Platinum Plus for the price of the parts,
but that's just me and a few others on here :)

I hate greasing swingarm bearings though, as it's such a faff, so the
Trump is going into Geoff Kernahans soon.

Without, coz you don't have to learn how to use the riveter.
Everyone's got a hammer and if he's not, one of his neighbours will.

  8. And on the vast majority of them you've counted the links correctly.

  9. Spete used the term and it seemed appropriate. I'll see how long it
    lasts.
