My 1997 600 Bandit needs some (a lot of?) work:

    New discs fornt & back.
Exhaust fitted properly (bit of metal holding exhaust to down pipes
    missing).
    New sprockets. (and chain, probably).
Service - bike pulls ok to about 3.5K, then chugs like a tractor, then
is OK again at higher revs, and generally backfires when engine braking.
    (To do with exhaust?)
    Speedo Cable
    Fork seals

I think this means loads of cash which I don't have, and I only really
use it for commuting to work each day. (12 miles each way)
    Can I part-ex such a heap?
Is it worth getting it fixed before part-exing?
Should I go to a breakers & get the bits & have those fitted?

    Any advice helpful

  2. Well the speedo cable can certainly be done yourself. I'm sure the
exhaust collar too. But if you're not competent at the rest, then you
may as well have them all done by someone who is.
Certainly several hundred quid at dealer prices. Plus parts. Plus Vat.
Probably, but for less that it's worth.
If you fix it, do you still want to part ex it?
Probably not. If you get the bits you need from a breakers, they'll
probably be worn. Try Ebay though, sometimes that turns up a bargain.

These are expensive to buy, but pretty easy to fit at home. So that'll
    cut the cost a bit.
Get the part from your dealer, should be a 15 min job to fit at home.
I don't like doing chains, but if you can get hold of a chain breaker,
then it's possible to do this at home. Reckon on an hour upwards to do.
Change the plugs, sort the exhaust. Probably also needs the carbs
balancing, but I'd have that done by a mechanic - should only be an
    hour's labour.
That's a definite to do at home - a tenner or so for the cable and half
    hour to fit?
That's probably one for someone who knows to do, really.
C&S about £80, discs £150-ish? they're the expensive parts. If you can
do these bits at home, along with plugs, exhaust connector and speedo
cable, then I reckon on another £100 at the garage for the rest of the
jobs. Looks like £400 to sort, then.
I rekcon a dealer would knock off anywhere from £500 to £1000 from their
'book' price for a bike that needs all the above, so not really worth
    it.
Once it's done, why part-ex it? - you'll have replaced bits that will
see you through the next 20k miles without further hassle.
Could be worth it for discs, if you can get them off an accident damaged
low-mileage example. C&S you'd have to buy new.

    Eeek a few hundred quid
    30 quid
    120 quid at the dealers
    200 quid
    30 quid ?
Cost about 30 quid to do yourself but expect 100 at the dealers.

The bike's probably worth around £1300 without the work being done.

I think you're looking at the thick end of 500-600ukp to get is sorted
    by the dealer.

    Do the math
No, the parts that need looking at are general wear and tear items.
The breakers items may also be worn and torn.
You probably wont like it but put on eBay with a reserve of 700ukp but
    describe the faults.

    CGB says...
Break it for spares and sell them on ebay. You'll get more for it this
way than selling it whole. As it stands in good looking condition you'll
be lucky to see about 600 to 700 quid if it needs that much work, and
maybe 1300 quid if you spend £400 - £500 on the repairs and a service. A
used Bandit 600 engine alone should fetch about 400 to 500 quid.
