Well ships would have needed some sort of unique ID, otherwise you
wouldn't be able to tell one from another, in a fleet situation.
Trains I'm not so sure about. But in neither case are the names
generally jusdt a name. They tend to be named after something, whether
it be an object, a country or a person. Small boats, I grant you,
often bear human names, but even then it's by no means required.

Anyway, however it started doesn't mean that we should allow it to
    start again with modern machines.
Only on TV though. And only for anthropomorphised vales of 'car'.

Not quite sure why you'd want to do this[1], but I like the idea...

[1] Cheaper, easier, and better handling to buy a K1 Thou.

  6. Almost as bad a vendors saying "I'll come down and see yourselves next
    week".

I had to almost physically[1] restrain myself.

[1] And now I'm sounding almost RP like..

You are. Your supposition, however, remains unaffected.

I recall a Performance Bike's reader's special from years ago, where
somebody had put an early Fireblade motor into a CBR400 frame.
Unfortunately they hadn't done much else, so the bike was still running on
standard CBR4 shock, forks and brakes. So basically the end result was just
about unrideable and only about 5kg lighter than a stock 'blade anyway.

The article, which was a full size one, rather than one of their old
inside-the-back-cover one-pagers, focused mainly on all of the work that had
gone to getting the motor in to the frame - hand made engine mounts, bespoke
air-box, etc. and then one paragraph at the end to what it was like to ride
and I guess that's the point. It's not about making a bike that is, in some
way, better than the stock stuff from the factory, but about making
something that's unique, personal and a demonstration of your skill.

There was something similar used to show up over Maidstone bridge in the
    mid 90s. FZR400 chassis, CBR900RR motor, NC30 swingarm and a rather
funky set of under-seat pipes, iirc.

Christ knows what it was like to ride but it looked tempting.

Because you end up with something that is individual and a demonstration of
what you personally can do, compared to a stock bike, however good, that
simply demonstrates that you can draw a cross in the signature box on a set
    of finance papers.

It's not my thing, because I can barely adjust a chain without having my eye
out with a spanner, but I can see why people do it.

I can speak only for the K4 thou, but the only stability issue of any
kind that I've noticed is down to the engine making oodles of grunt and
either sending the front skywards or the back sideways. The chassis is
stability personified. Anything with the thou engine fitted is going to
    exhibit the same characteristic.
