Sharing a USB printer with Linux

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by rufty_tufty_hoolythug, Nov 5, 2009.

  1. PC with Linux. I hava CentOS 5, Fedora 12 Beta, and Ubuntu 9.1
Desktop. The printer is a Samsung CLP-310 Colour Printer on a USB
port. I have tried setting up the sharing through CUPS. It is all
set but the two Mac laptops on my network, connecting wirelessly,
    cannot see it.

So, what's the best way idiot guide way to setup printer sharing using
one of these distros? What's the best way to connect the Macs? IPP
    or LPD?

I've only ever set printers up as RAW devices under cups, then it's
just a case of creating an IP printer device on each machine that
wants to use it, and installing the correct driver.

This method isn't browsable, but is reliable. and would probably work
on macs just like it does on windows.

Once set up under CUPS on the server, install on the mac using IPP (Mac
Os 10.5 and 10.6 use CUPS for printing, IPP is native).
If you authorized remote admin on the server (man cupsd.conf), you can
access the cups server using a web browser: http://serverip:631/

If you have Macs running 9.x, you should install Netatalk on the server
to print via appleshare (see papd.conf).

Print to http://serverip:631/printers/printername using ipp. It should
work fine bearing in mind the owner of the CUPS product. :)
