ICBW, but it looks to me like the lower piece of timber is not one solid

Just cut the two pieces diagonally and slide them together.
It looks like the two rectangular bits on each face slide in
on the other diagonal to lock it.

I'm assured that it's a single piece of wood

I've already emailed the bloke and asked him that question

The bugger just won't tell me how it's done

Very likely. See the kama-tsugi diagram here:

Does anybody have any idea how to make a shiho kama tsugi joint?
    Chainsaw?

Hmmm, I don't. Especially if it's the same on four faces.

Take a square log. Draw the joint on the 4 faces.
Suppose you also have a bandsaw with a narrow, vertical blade.
Lay the log flat but rotate it through 45 degrees so it's resting
on a corner instead of a face. Now cut along the line you drew earlier.
The saw will enter the two adjacent upper surfaces and exit the two
adjacent lower surfaces, along the line you drew earlier, if you cut
    accurately.

You have made one of those joints and can slide one piece vertically out.

Then you could rotate the log through 90 degrees and cut out the 4
    rectangles,
filing the holes with rectangular pegs to lock the joint.

    You cut along diagonals

i.e. between adjacent sides not across opposing sides

You then slide the top into the bottom pieces.

    Chainsaw ?

The only acceptable tool on UKRM is the angle grinder
