I need a mega cheap 4x4 just for winter, aint going down the expensive route
this time, anyone had one? I know parts are mega expensive if you need them,
but generally, are they decent enough to do 20 or 30 miles at a go without
    dropping to bits.

I hear of overheating probs, i would rather have a lwb & they are bloody
    cheap..

If you want cheap but adequate for light off roading then a Maverick or
Terrano 11 can be picked up for peanuts, and the parts are cheap as
    chips.

Didn't we do this a while ago? Along with the Vauxhall Nova and the
    Toyota MR2?

except the mirror housings. Can't find them in a breakers, and it'll
set you back best part of £200 for a new nearside door mirror.

Either that or avoid driving in the early morning in naturally-mamaged
    woodland ...

    Heh, get a Disco ...;)

Friend has an automatic 2000 my Shogun (pukka UK, IYSWIM, not a grey
import) and swears by it. She is, however unimpressed by power
delivery and load-carrying ability. She reckons it's under-powered,
especially if you have the family and luggage to take far. It has,
however, been extremely reliable, though a new exhaust cost something
approaching £300, but this was dealer fitted I believe .. ;)

It has 120k+ on the clock and she reckons it'll easily do the same
again. They've also had a complete new set of discs in it's time but
that's normal wear and tear. They use it offroad inasmuch as it's on
farm tracks to get hay to horses, slowly towing a water bowser (weighs
3 tons when full) between fields and general household/stable duties.

She says while it's been reliable for her she wouldn't have another ...
she doesn't like it, but it's just a feeling, nothing she can quantify.

Mind, her judgement can be judged when she says her next car will be a
    Mitsibishi/Nissan 'king-cab' pickup ... ;)

  10. I'll let you know... the Hilux has been pretty good but spent a cold 30
minutes changing glow plugs this morning at 6:30AM and it's currently in
the garage for wheel bearings and brake pads.

Really went up slippery roads well in 4wd today though.

  12. I'm looking for engine heater options for my SOJC and Tranny. I find
that even a 60W heater under the bonnet overnight makes a helluva
difference - there's loadsa space under the battery tray and the bonnet
is soundproofed, which doubles as very effective heat insulation.
Having seen the benefits of this meagre 60W for the past several
mornings [1], I'm definitely going the full way and getting a block or
    circulating heater.

[1] At -6C I reckon the battery lost at least half of its cranking
power. With the heater in place, the engine spins like it's autumn.

Found a lwb Pajero today, good condition, needs a good deep clean, only
problem was the transfer lever would not budge from 2wd ffs.

Not great, but possibly worth a punt as it could be a very easy fix, or a
    very fucked box...

  15. So... the noise I put down to the front near side wheel bearing
seemingly was due to... the near front side wheel bearing.

The vibration however... was probably due to the fact that the
propshaft-rear transfer box had 2 of the 4 bolts missing and the other
two slack and about to fall out.

    Whoops.

Still fixed now and no one was hurt.

hehe - went to see a belting looking Pajero lwb today, bodywork stunning,
interior dirty but cleanable. Took it fo0r a spin, it was bloody bang on,
until i went to shift it to 4wd....lever totally stuck, not moving jammed.

I have had hundreds of Land rovers, but these cunts are a bit different, not
    just a sticky lever.

He wanted £1700, didnt have a clue what he was selling. I walked at this
    point as i need 4wd..

He rang earlier asking if i wanted it as it was.

A bit of searching about gives me various options as to what it is.

    He wants £1200

    I bid him £800

The engine alone would do £300, so if it's a shitter i'll break it.

I had a 92 lwb Pajero Exceed with the 2.5 diesel. Would have another
one again but maybe try the 2.8 . The 2.5 is fine for pottering
around taking it easy at 50 or 60 mph. Too noisy and strained at
    motorway cruising speeds.

I had a rocker arm snap which stuffed the engine but since I had
somehow managed to do 30k miles without an oil change I figured it
owed me nothing. If going for a 2.5 definitely change the belts.

It's an easy fix. I'll see if I can find the bookmark for it. Check
the forum on the Pajero owners club.
