Shuddery vibrations on a motorbike.

I know it's a bit way out in the wilderness but have you checked the
wheel balance? I've had balance problems that only showed up on
braking and if you've been painting the wheels they'd have needed
    balancing before re-fitting.

Another thing to check, and I have seen this done, is whether you have
managed to get a disc pad in the wrong way round - that is assuming you
took the pads out. Matey was wondering why the bike had a brake judder
    and made a funny noise.

  3. Truly odd if both discs are the same part number. How's the wear pattern
on each disc - any difference? There's no vibration before braking?

As did the EBC discs I fitted to the 9R.

Coo, I'm glad I read the thread before replying. I'm of the same
opinion and I'm pleased there's two of us to look stupid.

    Bugger.

Go for a new set of pads then, in extremis.

I had the wheels balanced before fitting Andy. I had a weight come off a few
months ago and it was only a farty little one, but the difference it made
was very noticeable and I didn't want to go to the trouble of fitting the
wheels only to discover I'd have to remove one (or both) to get a smooth
    vibration free ride.

Looks like that idea was somewhat flawed.

Heh, I usually manage to do that without too much effort.

There's very little wear at all, considering the miles the bike has done
(~12000), but I'm not a heavy user coz it gives me a wife (as opposed to a
monkey) on my back (and neck and head). Still on its original pads, but what
wear there is on the discs will be caused by particular pads, so I'll swap
    the discs and hope.

Course, I'll also make doubly sure I've got both discs seated perfectly
flat, coz there's **** all like hearing "are the discs sat properly", a few
times to create a niggle of doubt.

I bet mine have too, but I've spent the day today clearing crap I'll never
use (careful with those thoughts) out the garage and building a nice shiny
new bike lift and I've not had the opportunity to inspect them.

An upside to the day though, when I was presented with a 500kg winch from
SWMBO, so I'll be installing that (and an "I" beam) in the garage tomorrow
and if I don't solve the bike problem by Monday night, I can use the winch
    to fucking hang myself.

    message
I'm all but convinced of it now, particularly after reading what Andy B and
    Champ had to say.
Y'know, I'm usually a stickler for labelling EVERYTHING because I truly
fucking hate what's happening now. I can live with cock ups or dodgy parts
fitted "just to do for now", and I've learned that I'm not clever enough to
remember where every part on everything I touch has to go, come the time it
has to go back, so labels and lots of 'em.

I did things *very* sightly differently this time, in that I half re-built
everythng as I took it apart. Spacers went back on axles, Cush drive rubbers
were taped to the sprocket carrier coz they has nipples on them and I KNEW
I'd get them the wrong way round, chalk arrows on the front wheel showing
roataion direction. Silly things, but they take the guesswork out. It never
crossed my mind that the discs would be sided, but even if they're not, they
still should've gone back on the same side they came off and I'm not sure
    they did.

I didn't need to remove the pads Loz, but it's a good thought. Cheers

First thing will be to swap the discs back and give it a try. If it's still
vibrating, I'll fit new pads for certain.

Ah, there's yer problem you see. It's hardly surprising you've got a
vibration with a fucking great big Andy fitted to your wheels.

I wasn't even pissed so I can't use that as a reasonable excuse. The
wheel balance thing is a shit to sort out sometimes, I've had a tyre
changed and the wheel balanced and then needed to have it balanced
about 500 miles later because it wasn't right.

Not so happy UN Loctiting though. I made sure there was *just* the right
amount went on the bolts when I refitted the discs so I suspect a little
heat will be called for. No oxy-acet, but a plastic welding heat gun thingy
    capable of 800deg C.

I don't use Loctite on the calipers though, I use an anti-seize compound
instead. They've never come loose and they're easy to remove next time.
