I appear to have just agreed to buy a family friends BMW R45 ... not the
most desirable thing but hey he offered it for a 100 quid :)

Stopped riding about 3 years ago so it's been in his garage ever since.

    I know :)

.... as I understand it I can graft a 650 top end onto it if I can find one
    cheap enough?

My uncle bought (back as it used to be his) the guys R80-RS mono. It too has
sat unused for years so I'm being called upon to work on both.

I'm guessing after this length of time gunge in the fuel tank, similar in
the float bowls, gunked up jets, poss split diaphragms, poss knackered brake
    seals etc

Not necessarily. But worth checking, yes. I think the brake seals will
be fine. And yes, a 650 kit goes straight on, but I think it has to be
from that particular model of R45/65, as the later R65s (monolever)
were just sleeved-down R80s, whereas the early ones had different
cranks. Short strokes. So the pistons are probably different as well.

    Thanks for the info.

I'm off to the US for 18 days as of tomorrow so collecting the said bikes
    are on hold.

Would there be any point in leaving it standard? I was just thinking
that a lot would have been converted into a 650 and original ones could
be getting rare. Added to that you could flog it to someone who had
recently passed their test and didn't want anything powerful.

When I first got a full license, mumble years ago, I was looking at a
R45 as an upgrade from a CB250-K4. In the end I got a Kawasaki GT550.

The R45 is one of the worst dogs ever made. Some sad old cunts want them
though. Don't waste time on it, just flog the POS.
