I succumbed to the Dark Side..... Bought a Yamaha XT 600E for
commuting & playing around the lanes on. Thought it may have been a
bit tall as the seat height is 855mm but got on it no problems, rode
it & can just put both toes down or a foot flat & foot on the pegs.
Great bike, very light front end <vbg> and only 1500ukp for a 2003
model which I didn't think was too bad really.

I pick it up tonight, save a flippin fortune on Corsa 3 tyres for the
R1 by not commuting daily on it.

So put normal Diablos on the R1, they're good enough for anyone bar
the really fast boys (and girls). AntonyE races his Ducati on them.
There's an awful lot of bollocks spouted about the 'need' for the
superstickiest tyres available, when a good sports tyre is all the
vast majority of us is ever going to have any call for. I'm not the
slowest rider, but my Daytona is currently on Michelin Pilot Road 2s
and I'm hooning the **** out of it on them with no problems
    whatsoever.

This is my ex, Tori, on her Daytona 600 with Diablo Stradas, the
harder compound sports touring version of the normal Diablos

You don't 'need' Corsa 3s, no matter how good you might think you are.

Though it does appear to be a multi compound tyre. Wonder how well they
    wear.

No idea, someone else on the trackday at Snetterton a couple of weeks
    ago. He's a bit upright.

Not very well. Friends have them and say that they stick as well as
anything else, but the wear rate is horrendous.

  8. Oh, well done, bloody well done.

I had one in the 1990s and it's one of those bikes I've always regretted
    selling.

The amount of fun I got from a bike that only just hot 100mph with a
howling tailwind..... Cheap to run, as well.

I stuck Avon Gripster tyres on mine, and could get my boot down on
    roundabouts.

It's actually half-usable on the dirt, as well.

Gripsters rock. Had them on an NX650, which I regretted selling too. I
blame Norwich Union, as they ditched the rider policy. Insurance for owning
more than one bike seemed expensive for a while, and I chopped in 2 bikes
    for a newish VFR.

Pretty much wot 'e said. I'm far from great, but I like to know that
in whatever situation I'm in I can rely totally on the tyres I have,
and that bike can outride me by miles. I've had the new R1 now 3
years, crashed it once & don't want to take any chances. I also like
the profile of the tyre, and tbh I'd rather stick with a tyre that has
thus far never given me any cause for concern, it's useful to have a
second bike to commute on and after playing on the XT last night I'm
    happy to have it :)

I think I'm going to have this one for as long as it'll run well.
    It's fantastic, I love it.
I managed 100mph with a tail wind & wrapped around the tiny tank last
night! Only just made it though :) But its not for the speed, its
great commuting, so skinny! I left James behind on his Mille last
    night through the traffic.
Ah right, I was going to ask people for tyre recommendations, I'll see
what's around like that then, ta.
Hehe, there is the temptaion to get off road tyres on another set of
wheels... Only problem now is I've got to look out for another one for
    the other half!
<VBG> I'm having fun already on it :)

I'll give the Gripsters a go then I think.

Actually the insurance quote for the pair was a tenner cheaper than
the R1 was on its own last year! 340 ukp quote, and the R1 was 350ukp
    last year. Can't be bad.

That is on a track though, with "grippier" tarmac than normal roads,
no? While I'm not massively convinced that I "need" qualifier style
tyres (I didn't have problems over the mountain at pahnd island on the
OE Dunlops this year), I'd rather go sports than sport-touring.

Give Mike Pearce at Cardiff Motorrad a ring for a quote. He has all the kit
to balance the wheels and his prices are keen.
