    Of the bikes I've ridden, only the NTV650 rates as more shite... and at
    least that has the defence of being pretty good at ticking along with
    minimal maintenance.

    Oh, I've heard that refrain many, many times. Usually, when you
    enquire, it metamophoses into: "He had loads of old Triumphs in the
    sixties" or "Well, he fixes cars, but he knows about bikes...."

    In my experience, at least 95% of private individuals buying or
    selling bikes really lack any kind of clue. For instance, how many
    people her always check engine and chassis numbers when they buy? Damn
    few, I'll bet.

    Last weekend I collected a Honda 250 from JackH's Dad. Lovely chap,
    honest bike, honest seller, etc etc, but I still went out with the V5
    to check the numbers.

    "Oh, I've never looked at them..." quoth he.

    "*Exactly*"

    Almost every ringer I've seen, the seller didn't know because he'd
    never checked the numbers. And the classic was the bod with the hookey
    GS850 earlier this year.
