My BMW R1200GS (04 reg, realistic private price £4.5k) and £1k.

Suprising thing they discovered about the GS, when I bought it I found
the front shock was leaking so they replaced it with a new OEM one. The
new one is leaking again, after only 1k miles. Genuine BMW part too.
After hearing that I started to think I might have gotten rid of a
    potential headache.

So this is the later Girl's bike not the earlier Real Man's bike?

I thought those GSs held their value better then that.
Sounds like a lucky escape. I've always liked the GS after riding
darsy's some years ago but reading this group has put me off.

Any chance you could take a photo of that tail tidy? It looks much
neater than the hefty mudguard on mine

Saved me the trouble of pointing that out.

The only thing that steered me toward an early 10R over a gixer thou was
the extra power. But Kawasaki have never made a good looking 10R, so a
    gixer it is.

The 1200s are dropping rapidly. Quality, especially electrical gremlins,
has got worse over the last couple of years and lots of people are dumping
them after the factory warranty expires. The fancy electronics make it
difficult for independent service people to diagnose and fix faults.

The older bikes like my 1150 and especially the 1100s are fairing much
better. There's little in the way of fancy electronics on them and the can
be maintained by anyone competent with spanners.

Some of the older mono/paralever GS variants from the 80s and early 90s are
    actually increasing in value.

Hmmm I'd make an offer for yours except when I rode Chris's it felt like
being compressed into some malformed Iron Maiden. At least the Gixxer's
    feel reasonable accomodating.

It just seems to completely loose the number plate holder and in its
place is a simple small metal plate. (no idea if thats part of the OEM
    tail?)

The black and white plate is held on by velcro, I'll have to get velcro
on the standard plate so I can leave it under the seat and swap them
    when "needed".

Nice, but black is the only colour. Or blue :)
I've read that they run rather rough without the baffles, need a
Powercommander III to get it running smooth again, so I think mine will
    stay in for now.

The Gixxer Thou and R1 seem to be a lot smaller than the 10R, and as I'm
6'5" and don't want to look like Moz with a childs scooter vanishing up
my arse I decided the 10R was for me.

The front postbox looks a bit wierd, but I like it overall.

I've got a BMW for comfort, a KTM for embarrassing faster bikes and a
    semi-sorted 10R for lunacy. Why should I give a **** if a gixxer is
    more 'accommodating?

I'm looking at K3/K4 gixers, rather than the K5-onward type. Much
bigger. I've tried to like the 10R, but a good close look at a green C2
last Friday was the final nail in the coffin. U-G-L-Y ugly.

The thing that struck me about mine, was that compared to current
Suzukis, Yamahas and Hondas the Kawasaki's industrial design was still
very much in the late 90s. And the paint quality was rubbish.
