  1. Yup. Hairdryer time, methinks.
Checking completed auctions on Fleabay, I see a one-owner Trophy (item
270028734517 - same year as mine, only 3500 mileage, and in much better
nick than mine), made £2800, so mine probably wasn't even as much as my
    low estimate.

So on that basis, I'm happy with the deal.
I pick it up on Friday and I'm around next weekend, if you're anywhere
    in the vicinity.

BTW, have you heard anything from Champ or Owen regarding the "exhaust
    tag team"?

  3. The exhaust was dropped off by Champ on Saturday, and fitted by yours
truly today. The Z definitely sounds (and goes) much better. I also
    fitted the new rear mudguard.

Next task - the head races, a new front tyre, and a pair of decent
    shocks.

OK, fair enough. I guess they were probably afraid to have me come to
    close to their bikes :).
Not as much work as the Morini, eh?

  5. Hmf. Rather more, actually.

Especially as when I'd fitted the rear guard, the brake light stopped
working. Turned out there was a previous-owner electrical bodge for it
that chose that moment to go on trike.

Tell you what, though: this is now one bloody nice Z650, both
    cosmetically and mechanically.

    How's the Motosport?

    It's grown another wheel, too?

It seems to be the day for 'leccy bodges - I just discovered that the
gel battery on the chop had *exploded*. No, really.

    Anyway, what's the bodge?
Which is more than you could say for the Morini. I guess you'd have to
invest the same amount of work and *then* fork out for a paint job.
It's a runner. That is, if you kick the living daylights out of the
fucker for about 30 minutes, it'll run for about 30seconds. Which is a
marked improvement over the other one with a decent engine because you
have to kick that even longer.

Anyway, I played with it a tad more and the fuel tap bowl was full of
crusty shite. Traced that a bit further and it looks like the float
needle sticks in the closed position randomly. I guess the vibration
frees it off again and the bowl fills, so it keeps running...

I *bet* that that's one of the problems with the other Motosport as
well as both can be kicked over at full choke until you're red in the
face and still show a dry plug.

    The bastards.

  7. Oh, I suspect that the fuse holder for the brake light fuse broke, so he
ran the wires outside the fuse box, and added a wire running directly
from the front brake light switch. That and the connection from the rear
switch meet in a junction box.

    It all works.

The problem was he used those crappy bullet connectors and they weren't
secure and well, you can guess.
Probably. I'm still torn between keeping the Z and selling it. It's a
lovely bike to ride, which is in its favour, and I reckon that with the
replacement exhaust, it's worth about £1600, which is slightly less than
    it's cost me.

    Buy an XT and smile.

    Oh yes :-/.
And you didn't write about it a lot in Classic Bike either, I noticed.
To make up the shortfall, like.
You mean, because I've got it going after hopping up and down on the
    kickstart for two days solid?

Just to confirm that I'm not completely useless with a kickstart I
fired up the Triumph today, partially for a pre-MOT test (which it
failed) and to confirm if it was running rich or not.

It is. Mainly because one of the POs fitted Japanese switchgear with an
integrated choke lever. And the lever doesn't have enough travel to
lift the choke on Amal up all the way.

Oh well, remember that Motosport which came with a "choke lever off
some old Britbike" (your words)? Turned out to be a perfect fit, that
    one.

  12. Heh. Well, I've owned Beemers before. What I intend to do is maybe chip
it, and see what can be done about the handling. ISTR that Hog's went
round corners amazingly well for such a lardy old bus. Suggestions?

Ohlins or Fournales rear shock, possibly Progressive fork springs. TBH
I wouldn't necessarily chip it as most chips seem to work on the
premise that dumping huge amounts of fuel into the engine does more
    than increase bore wear.

There's some info about tuning them on the ibmwr site, IIRC.

Ah I'm just catching up with the full thread. I was referring to the
    R100RS at the IOM.

Sooo TOG has himself an LT. Woo Hoo. Great bikes, just one thing spoils
them (for me), they need another gear or top gear 15% higher. When
Ultimate Source were still around they did supply a cog conversion. TOG
OTOH might be happier cruising a little slower.

Mine did have an Ohlins with the hydraulic preload adjustment.
Progressive fork springs. New head bearings. Make sure the 'arm bearings
are right. Careful tyre choice. Bob's your cross dressing Auntie. IMHO
most of the mid corner weaving is down to small inputs through the
tiller like bars. Reducing the play in the rubber mounts at the top yoke
helps. There was some info on ibmwr about this too.

Once again I found that EBC HH pads worked. With new goodridge hoses it
turned good brakes into eyeball poppers.

All you need now are some proper lights )

  18. I've just dug out an old BIKE roadtest, comparing the Pan, R1100RT,
K1100LT and (surprise!) the 1200 Trophy.

The R1100RT was rated the best, closely followed by the Pan. The K was
the most economical, and superbly comfy, but its handling was a bit,
    erm, soggy.

The Trophy had a stormingly torquey engine and was built as well as the
    BMW, but did just 31mpg....

I'm not expecting sports bike handling, but like I said, I've got a
    Ducati for that.

Nope. Bonners reckoned they could be made but the amount of hassle
involved closed my decision to sell it.
