    Hello ukrmc.

Last week I attended a writer's do at Derby's industrial museum. We
went for a wander and there was a gorgeous looking SOB, made by Silk,
stuck gathering dust as an exhibit. Chatting to a couple of the
curators and the poor thing has been sitting there since 1996.

I suggested it should be running and going on regular outings. Their
engineer, Derek, is of a similar mind, but bogged down in all his
other restoration stuff. Does anyone have any experience/knowledge of
Silk motorcycles? Should I just get straight onto the Birmingham
    museum?

And who is going to lend me their copy of "The British Classic Bike
Guide 'Choosing, Riding and Enjoying the Machine of Your Dreams'
    By Frank Westworth "

  5. Scott offered a three-cylinder two stroke (747cc, later 986cc) in 1934 and a
596cc Clubman Special in 1938. After the war, production continued with the
596cc Flying Squirrel, but ended in 1950. Then the company was taken over by
Matt Holder's Aerco Jig and Tool Company. A 493cc Scott Swift based on the
old design was made from 1956 to 1961. Later a later Silk model was
produced, but it was a short-lived project.

You're not, it was. I've found out a bit about them but now I want to
know what it would take to get a two stroke that has been standing
    running again.

Water-cooled two-stroke twin? Hmm, can't imagine who round here would know
    about that sort of thing...

Other answers give a little of the history and yes, it was basically
ap updated Scott 600cc 2-stroke water-cooled twin. Quite quick, they
were too. I visited the factory a couple of times back in the 70s - it
was down by the old mill at Darley Abbey locks, on the road that takes
you across a bridge and out to Mansfield/Alfreton road. Dunno what's
    down there nowadays.

    I haven't lost my mind, it's
backed up to a floppy disc
    that's around here somewhere.

A rather good restaurant right on the bridge, not sure what's in the
    yard.

Oh yes, there used to be one there way back then, as well. Opened in
    about 1981, IIRC.
