Siting a number plate

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Whinging Courier, Oct 30, 2004.

  1. Is there a law that says a bike number plate has to be at the back of
    the bike?

I know it must be rear facing and in the correct font etc etc but say
for instance I wanted to put my plate on the RHS of my bike, about 18"
back and halfway between the seat and the ground. Would this be ok?

Seems like a good way to avoid speed cameras.

I saw a motard type machine with the number plate mounted like this a few
    months back.
    Dunno about the legality mind.

    Extract:
    (5) This paragraph requires the plate to be fixed -

    ....

    (b) in such a position that in normal daylight the characters of the
registration mark are easily distinguishable from every part of a
relevant area having the diagonal length specified in paragraph (6).

    Summary:
    fucked if I know.

I've seen a few cruisers with the plates off toward the centre of the right
wheel, I'd guess the bottom of the plate'd be about in line with the axle.
But maybe they got away with it because they looked harmless - As yours
looks like its about t' bite someone it might attract attention. Mind you I
like that electronic Rebecca Loos caller, I do, I really, *really* do. And
the style of the lights. Looks like something off Alien.

    5. - (1) This regulation applies to vehicles, other than works trucks, road
rollers and agricultural machines, first registered on or after the relevant
    date.

    (2) A registration plate must be fixed on the rear of -

    (a) the vehicle, or

    (b) where the vehicle is towing a trailer, the trailer, or

    (c) where the vehicle is towing more than one trailer, the rearmost
    trailer.

Your answer's pretty clear according to this. This is a 2001 Act so I
presume relevant date is sometime in 2001-2002. Not really relevant as
before that day it says it has to be fixed "on the rear of".
Maybe you can get a bike and go backwards through speed cameras?
