  1. "Great Minds", and all that....

Most scientific discoveries are heralded by a tentative "Hmmm. That's funny..." instead of a jubilant "Eureka!"

Aye, and a scientist who discovers something and says "Eureka" is either

    Pick the most likely?

But ultimately sellers don't decide what something is worth, do they.

It has a common usage in the English language, most people would not
even know it's an Ancient Greek word, but they know it's meaning. And
its a nice simple word which saves the speaker about a dozen English words.

I suspect because of the type of bike and type of rider rather than
    shaft v chain per se.

I think shafties tend to be tourers, cruisers, and the occasional all
rounder rather than sportbikes. Meaning they don't suffer the "must
have next year's model" problem anywhere near as badly and sell to a
    different demographic too.

Yea even Guzzis. I think the Le Mans is a sporty tourer not a
sportbike or even "sport tourer" as the latter is usually used to
mean "not cutting edge sportbike and you can put panniers on if you
try and the pillion seat's not truly awful but it is really for the
    twisties".

So the depreciation profile's different with shafties.

Yeah but the current CB250 is the old CB200 on steroids and even the 200
was the old CB175 from the '60s so I reckon John's "25 years" is
    UNDERPLAYING it!

OK; I see the problem here.
GS was just using logic, experience and facts as opposed to weird-arsed
    hypothetical extrapolation.

Plan C might be to pal up with someone local who can, without bias, advise
you what to do, what to attempt, what to ignore and what to pay for while
you build up your own skills.
I was fortunate in that I had some clever big-brothers who could bail me
out of the shit so I had that as an insurance policy in case I ever bit off
    a bit too much.
It's probably too late to petition your own parents for an elder biking
sibling but there's gotta' be a colleague or friend who can hold your hand
a little.... It's not really that hard if you have a logical approach.

It's my fault Clem... really... people aren't used to me using logic, facts
or experience when I post :)

    Hey Clem,

You mightn't be used to hearing this from this newsgroup <grin> but
    THANKS!!!!!!

Any biking people in my family are dead or still in Pommie-land.... apart
from my baby bro who lives in Brissie and doesn't get down here much, and is
more a rider than a tinkerer anyway *sigh*.... holy crap, looks as if I will
have to carry the flag for bike mechanics in my family (oh SHIT, be afraid -
    big time!!!!!!)

I have a really good mate here who is an absolute legend. He does heaps of
stuff to his bike himself (it scares me sometimes because every single time
I've seen his bike it looks as if it's just come off the showroom floor -
I've seen him actually ride it so I know it goes out on the road. I've
pillioned with him as well. I've ridden WELL behind him - and his bike never
has so much as a dust-mote on it! ) He's fanatical, and that's probably good
for me, coz I'm a slob. We balance each other out somehow. I think he lifts
my game <grin> Yesterday he loaned me a manual.... I think that means he
knows I'm serious about getting down and dirty with my weeny bike!!!!!!

For me I think the bottom line, if I'm absolutely honest, is that I don't
actually want to be my own mechanic. I want to be able to do basic stuff
like chain-cleaning, changing oil, changing air filters, replacing clutch
cables, adjusting the chain....maybe even being able to have a vague idea
about how to diagnose problems even if I can't fix em... I just don't want
to feel like a total moron - and I want to understand enough about the rest
of the bike so that a mechanic won't think I'm a total moron either!

Hey, just want to have a 2 second brag about my recent problem with the
weird noise.... I originally said that it sounded as if the chain was trying
to jump off, every time I changed down.... well that's exactly what it was!
Not the cam-chain (yay!) I now have a sparkly new chain AND sprockets ....
and the bike is nice and smooth and not making horrible noises any more! Yay
