Prolly not a flash, but some sort of lighting. Esp. at night. Unless
    it's a got a light enhancing capability.

Either way, video is much more tricky to avoid.

Mr Brunstrom has dismissed the 10% plus 2 setting up here, apparently all
the gatso's and camera vans have been set to trip at anything over the
locations posted limit. So 30.5 gets you a ticket in a 30 zone

I just don't get this. The technology needed to record a digital still
is EXACTLY the same as that need to record moving video. The only
difference is that you have to record (say) 25 stills per second instead
of one at each end of the second

Please explain (for the hard of thinking) why video makes it more likely
you'll be caught speeding than two stills

The main thing that I understood, was that by using video, there is
less of a "failure rate" in catching speeding cars. Okay from the URL,
it's not so much the fact that video is possible, but more the fact
that there are three still cameras, covering a wider area.

    My bad.

  6. You know what will happen then though. Every car will be required to be
fitted with a 20mph controller that will kick in as soon as you pass a
transmitter on a pole at the entrance to a zone.

That won't work, or will only work partially, so there will be
compulsory scrapping of older cars that can't be retrofitted with this
device and every new car will have a GPS speed controller... happy sighs
of relief from the Safety Nazis.

  7. "The MCS is made by Dutch firm Gatsometer, maker of the ubiquitous
    Gatso."

I wonder if Gatsometer and the bloke Gatsonides get much hate mail.

"The new machine can hold up to 60,000 images of speeders on its
encrypted hard-drive while the photos can be downloaded at any time via
a telecommunication link. This, plus the fact that it comes with defence
spikes to deter vandals, means the MCS is almost maintenance-free -
something which will appeal to UK safety camera partnerships."

Somehow I don't see defence spikes being much use against shotguns.

  8. Squeeze until the pips squeak and then squeeze some more.

The man's an utter ****, and a dangerous loony to boot. The sooner
somebody runs him over, the better.

Economics innit, more people are slowing down so in order to maintain the
cashflow they need to move the margins :)

The ones on my route to Warwick have armco alongside them (to stop the
trick of 'nudging' them with a truck, as practised on the A40), and
stickers on saying "These cameras are monitored by Warwickshire
police". So sabotage and vandalism are obviously a worry.

It's often said that other nations, like the French or the Americans,
    wouldn't stand such things for 5 minutes.[/QUOTE]

....which would explain why the 3 fixed cameras[1] I go past on a return trip
to Limoges airport (400km in total) are all behind the armco... Being
naive, I'd just thought it was to protect people in case of an accident.
Jesus, I'm very *very* naive sometimes.....

Following on from WC's earlier post about nails on his garden wall,
couldn't someone sue for injuring themselves while attempting to
vandalise one? Any takers for a trial run?

    Interesting point... so to speak.

In a similar vein, there's a Royal Mail post box in Cambridge whose
'lid' is covered in spikes. It's been like that for years.
