  1. On the evidence, we aren't either. The Gatso near me, on the A217, has
been destroyed at least twice. Maybe three times.

You know, it's not far off already. In Dubai Taxi's are controlled like
this, so if they go over the speed limit constantly on the 'A' roads (I
couldn't call them motorways), then not only is the driver alerted by a
beeping in the car, but it's recorded by the licencing authorities
(using GPS positioning, etc). Do this constantly and the driver will
lose his licence. However, I don't know if this applies to 'in-town'
    driving.

Yeah, like ****. There was a recent case of a couple of bikers that
stopped off to destroy one of the new digital cameras. Their plates
were noted by a number of 'considerate drivers' and said bikers were
    duly nicked.

The French have accepted them. It doesn't mean that they don't whinge
bitterly about them. Like the Brits.

Saying that, CCTV is still very much a no-no at the moment, but it
doesn't mean you're not filmed. It just means that you have to be
informed that you're being filmed (by big notices everywhere) and the
tapes are only allowed to be kept for 24 hours (or some ridiculously
    short period of time).

To be frankly honest, IMO the fact that there are such restrictions on
filming does not make the certain areas in France any safer. If there
where more cameras in La Defense for example, people from Adie's
company would be less likely to be mugged. La Defense wouldn't turn
into a no-go zone, after all the shops shut.

    Swings and roundabouts.

Bollocks it wouldn't. What do you think hoodies are for?

With the amount of cameras that are dotted around London (for example),
do you really think that wearing a hoodie would make them invisible to
    any recognition?

  6. Of course, 1 and 2 are vandalism and likely to get you in serious
bother, should you get caught. I don't know whether it would be legal
to simply cover one up with say a bin liner ? It wouldn't be damaged or
anything... Better still, I wonder where the highways mob get those
    "Not in use" covers... :)

Also, they seem to have wireless link, I wonder how prone that is to
either disruption or being hacked by rogue pimply youths..

Actually, that could be construed as perverting the course of justice, and
could get you in a lot more trouble than "accidentally" knocking one over.

  8. Heh - I accidentally borrowed a JCB officer, and it veered out of
control.. yes.. just before the armco started back there... and next
thing I knew bang... the camera was down.

Then as I was having a cigarette to calm my nerves I noticed that
petrol from the JCB had covered the camera and _whoompf_ up it went.

That's why, as you arrived, I was attempting to put it out with all I
    had to hand...

do you think I could get some sort of award for being civic minded ?

Hasn't stopped the irate drivers round this way, on the A20, M2 etc.

I don't know whether it would be legal
    Fuggit, set it alight.

    It wouldn't be damaged or
    See above
Nowt a power supply interruption would cure.

  10. I think Singapore does (or will do) something along those lines too. A
few years ago they started off innocuously enough with automated road
tolling - ever wonder where Ken got the idea from?

  11. Alright then - a hoodie and a baseball cap?

Yes this does block out people's faces - I should know as I had to sit
as a jury member where the case was to do with an assault on a national
rail station. CCTV taped images formed a substantial part of the
    prosecution evidence.

Guess what the chosen dress code was for the assailants? Was it
possible to definitively identify people as the attackers on the tape
beyond reasonable doubt? - no it was not.

Whether it does or not is immaterial. The perps will believe it does,
therefore the cameras will have no deterrent effect. The only options are
a)flood the area with CRS, b)move the Business Slum somewhere less pikey, or
c)move the gastarbeiters somewhere more pikey.

I agree that there will be cases like this, but I still think that
people are less likely to be mugged/assaulted/etc if cameras are
allowed to be present everywhere, with no time limit on the length the
    tapes/media are kept.

I've always felt a damn site more safer on London Transport at night
than I ever have on the French RATP.

You have faith that there's someone on the other end of the cameras who
gives a stuff about your welfare and is a position to do something useful
    about it?

No, not really. But I hope that if something did happen, there'd be
more of a chance to catch the bastards (They're not all likely to be
    wearing hoodies).
