    Hi

I have just heard that 170,000 people die in the UK each year from smoking
related diseases each year, being that I have given up smoking and taken up
motorcycling I thought I may be able to use this agument to convince my wife
that it is safer now that I ride a bike than when I was smoking, so I was
wondering how many die each year in the UK on bikes ?

For those of you who bike and smoke I'm sorry I bought up the subject :)

    Regards, David

I dunno the figure you need, but I know around 3000 people die each
year on the roads in the uk. I'd be surprised if bikers represent
    more than 10% of this.

Is it safer with the visor up or down? I guess visor up, wind blows ash
everyhere and fags don't last long. Visor down and your lid fills with
smoke. Best not to bother then eh?

I saw a rider do this in New York. It was about a million degrees [1]
below freezing and the was quite a lot of traffic coming into Times
Square. The lights turned to red and this huge Hardly with an equally
huge rider pulled to a stop. The lights turned to green but he just took
his time a lit up a smoke, no one sounded their horn for him to move.

    [1] It felt like it.

Been to London lately? Couriers smoke and ride all the time. There's a nice
big burn mark in the front bit of a surprising amount of couriers lids, both
    open and closed.. Risky business.

If 3400 people die in road accidents, and about 15% of those are bikers then
you will have a figure to play with - if you don't ride a bike you are less
likley to die in a road accident, BUT - not everyone who dies on the road
was in charge of a vehicle - that figure of 3400 includes passengers,
    pillions and pedestrians.

However - if you gave up smoking at the age of 70 you would only have a 16%
chance of dying of a smoking related disease so giving you a 84% chance of
dying of something else. But seeing the average age expectancy of a male in
the UK is about 74 means you will have only 4 years to find something to
    die of!

Finally - 16000 people commit suicide each year - fed up with living a
misrable existance and possibily caused by their other half who didn't let
    them have a bike!

  13. And if you stop biking, there's a pretty good chance of it never
killing you, whereas the same cannot be said for smoking.
