I'm expecting much the same with my bike even with the claws. Hopefully
the R&G crash and fork protectors I spent all Sunday fitting will help.
I'll have panniers on as well which should cushion some of the falling
    over.
That's what prompted the purchase, my street is still a bob sleigh run
and if I couldn't get the bike out then what hope had I to get to
    Loh/Thurmansbang ?

  6. I'd say you're in for a bumpy ride.
Just hope it's relatively deep snow all the way from when you put them
on, because it'll be a total pita on/off/on/off etc.

I keep thinking about buying a set of claws because they can be fitted
to any bike and should last years but I don't suppose I'll ever get
    round to ordering some.

Heh, must admit it's hard to justify splashing out on an item that may
only be used once in a lifetime. Lucky for me I've been conditioned by
our modern society to be a prodigious consumer of stuff that I probably
    don't need or want ;-).

There is at least 4 bikes on this trip that will be able to use them if
we do get bogged down in snow.

I can only see those working if the bike is upright.

I'd suspect that the bike would still be as likely to fall over going round
bends as if they weren't fitted.

What you need is those plus those side skis in that other uTube vid.

  12. I suspect if it gets necessary to fit those things, forward progress
will be at a walking pace anyway. Better to arrive at all than ditch the
    bike, I suppose.

Whilst crawling at 1mph towards the doctors this morning I spotted some
idiot/fool/loon/brave person on an ikkle 125 sports repro riding through the
    snow and packed ice.

I was so intruiged I almost stopped and got out just to see if they fell off
at the roundabout 300 yds in front of them.

This video was linked from elsewhere:

He falls off twice, once at 1m10s, once at 5m15s. But both at low speed
    - something to do with the gyroscopic effect keeping him upright?

When the snow was heavy and the M8 closed to cars a courier could make a
good living on an XT500 with trials tyres. Treble time.

Run soft on snow (not ice) some trials tyres are much as snow tyres, with
lots of little cuts on the knobblies
