Coz a school bus stops once in the morning and again in the afternoon
our road gets gritted to buggery and the council depot is just down the
road so if the gritters are moving I have clear access.

  6. I live on a steep hill, right by the main road, also steep hill and bus
route. No grit. When we had the snow a year or so back, no grit again - and
I *had* to drive someplace. Ended up with two Brent Council chaps waling
ahead of the car with buckets of grit chucking it ahead of the veehickle
with shovels. Sort of funny. <snort>

Loads round ours. Had to keep avoiding sodding great piles of ball
bearing effect grit on the way home last night.

I'm amazed, I live a thousand foot up, in the middle of nowhere, 2 miles
up an unclassified road, and the gritters are out without fail at the
first sign of frost. Does your council (Brent?) believe urban areas are
    naturally warmer?

  9. God knows. When we had Really Heavy Snow about four years back - yes, at
least an inch! - I drove home from Westminster. I was fine till I got to the
Brent borders. From then - about three miles? - it took over four hours to
get home. I had to abandon the car in the end and walk. Went back about
eleven pm when the roads were a bit better, picked up car and drove back via
the chippy. Codnchips and a nice bottle of red wine.

Ride? Naah, **** that for a game of soldiers.

I do so enjoy driving in the snow though, in the right sort of
vehicle, of course. Snow tyres, 4wd & traction control make it
possible to drive at near-normal speeds, and only deliberately clumsy
use of the right foot can induce said vehicle to misbehave...

Nope, North Circ was the first really clear bit of road this morning.

  19. They came and did the pavement corners at lunchtime. The snow had melted by
