In an Alfa - it started in the cold then? ;-)
Or just come to a graceful halt....

  2. Hah. I used to do that in various shiteold2wds, being hooted and flashed
at by up-themselves cunts in Volvos and the like. Well, I mean, just
    'cos they can't drive...

  3. The 'stop' is the clue.
Don't stop, ever. Keep it rolling and you'll get there.
Not helped by some clueless tarts and wankers who don't know how and
shouldn't be out if they're going to drive like grannies.
Btdtgts, many times nearly home after a long snowy journey and got
stranded within a hundred yards or four miles of my front door because
    of a twat.

The only 2wd that I ever had much of a problem in was a RWD Cavalier. The
back end was just a tad too light. Mind you , when I got stuck down a
service road [1] behind the shops in Newport Pagnell [2] I found that the
local satellite installation shop's dump of old coax cable most useful. Wrap
it round the the tyress, through the holes in the wheels and hey presto,
instant snow tyres. Doesn't last long but gets you up a slope and out of
    trouble.

[1] Dec 1990, a 1 in 4 slope covered in refrozen packed snow.
[2] Yes there is something there apart from the services

    Yeah, my thoughts exactly.

The best fun I ever had was in an old 1982 Honda Civic Sport. A little 2
door motor with a poky 1300 twin carb engine, it was excellent at doing
handbrake slides around corners and roundabouts in the snow.

  7. No, that was the outcome.
Well yes, that was the aim, but too slow, some ruts and summer tyres
full of freshly compacted snow, conspired against me.
    Quite.

I'll see your Cavalier, and trump you with a 1.8 Marina - ner!

Proper spiked winter tyres on a 2WD driven by a skilled driver usually
    beats new 4WD owners :))

Not that unusual, even in RWD stuff, if you're getting decent weight
transfer onto the fronts before cornering, IME.

(I used to wear out the rears first, before having some track tuition)

I didn't realise how shite my driving was until I'd had proper
instruction - the amount of weight transfer my instructor got onto the
front wheels was unbelievable - whereas, on my assessment lap, I'd been
getting understeer on the turn-in, the instructor was getting the car to
go exactly where he pointed it - all down to hammering the brakes harder
    than I believed possible.

Billinge (its got an e), highest point in Merseyside :)

The ridge over to Orrel/Pemberton is crakcing, especially with the near
    blizzard we had.

On a good day, you can see Blackpool tower, just not today :)

Oh I dunno. My 1300 Marina was quite good in the snow.

The 1.8 was worse, on account of much more weight at the front end.
