After a spirited ride today, taking in the Epynt mountain [1], I have
decided that the rear shock has pretty much had it.

What's the recommendation for replacement? - they appear to be a bit
'how fscking much?!', but are cheaper from German eBay sellers.

[1] http://www.italiancar.co.uk/epynt.jpg - we were above the clouds up
there, so had a chilly drop down towards Llandrindod Wells.

    Hagon are usually pretty decent.

    They should be, at £275.

This appears to be what costs £275 in the UK, but a lot cheaper.

(Sadly my German never really progressed beyond GCSE level plus a bit
picked up from colleagues at Tchibo)

Those are for a twin shock one - wasn't yours a mono?

And yes, a quick skim of the ad suggests that they're indeed flogging
Hagons. Price is for the basic bog standard version for the twin shock.
They don't really mention anything about the monos.

Doh! Yes - it's in the title.

They really should show a pic of a pair!

Monos are 'HFM!?', as they are in the UK.

  6. All monoshocks are an arm and a leg, though.

    Do Quadrant Dynamics still exist?

Do I need to replace the spring, or is just a damper likely to fix
things? - only an OEM damper can be had for about £100 less than a
    complete shock / spring assembly.

  8. Chuck it at Maxton for a complete overhaul. Only £100-odd.

I'd ask Maxton how much for them to make a replacement Steve. But I
think it is going to be £400

The OEM dampers for the mono models are affordable at £155. I expect
your spring is a bit tired though.

The Hagon unit is priced to be exactly the same as a complete OEM Boge
    unit!

Of course you REALLY want a 46PRC Ohlins at £557

Right. I've got a Koni, which is superb. They stopped making them for a
while, but I've seen new monolever shocks on eBay recently, that look to
be a similar pattern, so someone may be.

Try the usual suspects: Sherlocks, Motobins Motorwerks (sp?). There are
so many out there, I can't believe there aren't any to be had for
200-250 (about what mine cost some years back). The Koni transformed the
handling too - dosh well spent, IMHO.

IIRC, the company bought the tooling etc, but isn't allowed to call them
Koni, so they just made an anagram of the name.

I forgot to mention: I was told years ago that the OEM units (BMW ones)
die after standing for a while (seals or whatever), and they aren't
fully serviceable, unlike twin shock ones.

I've seen a few NOS BMW ones come up on eBay recently. Wouldn't go near
    them with a 20ft pole...

    Cheers,

    S.

PS: If this is an old wives' tale, I'd love to know.

I must admit I find Monoshock prices a bit eye watering too but I guess
it is what the market will stand. And funnily enough a Progressive
Suspension unit seems to be the same as the Hagon, same as the OEM.

Then you have Maxton, Technoflex and Ohlins above £400

Progressive appear to only sell via Chromosexual dealers in Europe.

I'll probably end up forking out for a Hagon or Ikon.
