SOB: Sticky Starter

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by rufty_tufty_hoolythug, May 27, 2010.

  1. FZ600 1987. The one with the XJ engine. Starter had been turning
bike over fine but now will turn engine for a two or three turns and
then stick. REPEAT Into gear, shuffle back and forwards UNTIL starter
turns long enough to start bike. As you cn imagine, it's a bit
    annoying.

So, advice please. Is this a sticky or knackered starter? Could the
    starter clutch be at fault?

Is there any oil in the gearbox ?
Could be knackered bearings in the bendix gear / starter clutch or in
    the starter motor itself.
The only way to find out is to pull it out and have a perkle.

  3. If it's just the starter then that will be easy enough to remove and
get reconditioned or replaced. Looking at the manual, messing about
with the starter clutch didn't fill me with joy.

Sounds like a duff starter motor. Doubt it's the clutch, if it's not
making any horrible noises. Another used starter motor shouldn't be
hard to find, anyway. If that doesn't fix it, then it'll be the
    clutch. Good luck with that.

FZ600s don't have separate gearboxes. If there's no oil in the
gearbox, there's none in the engine and a duff starter motor is the
    least of his worries.

LOL! I did wonder about that, especially given the poster.

He really takes this "giving technical advice on subjects you know
absolutely nothing about" to a new level, doesn't he?

Have you ever heard of the phrase "Generic answer" YTC.
Read what I wrote - the idea of "Bendix gear or starter clutch" should
be a clue that the answer was NOT intended to be model specific.
