My 1998 Mundaneo 1.8LX had done 180k miles and was due a new clutch so
I felt it was time for an upgrade.

I've replaced it with, wait for it, another 1998 Mundaneo with a mere
    105k on the clock. Except this time it's a 2.5 V6 Ghia X automatic
    [1].

Prepare yourself for accelerated climate change.

    [1] it's a bit gorgeous.

I had one of those as a company car. The gearbox died at 70k miles & it
took Ford over 2 months to sort it. Even then they wired it up wrong,
    so 1st was 2nd & vice versa.

If it's still on the original box - good luck.

I had a 1997 Mazda MX6 with the 2.5 V6 plus auto. My assumption is that
they are the same units. I found them to be a very satisfactory
combination. Gearbox was still working fine at 80k.

I part-exed the car after a little incident involving the B4234 becoming
part of the River Wye. So, I suppose I Niged it out after doing an
    Aquachamp.

And you'd be dead right too. Apart from the warranty of course, because
Mazda did an unlimited mileage 3 year warranty where Ford only did 2 years.

I found them to be a very satisfactory
They're normally a bloody good box, it's the manual boxes that are
problematic in that they cost a ridiculous amount of money and are far from
being an easy box to repair coz getting parts for them is a nightmare.
    One must :)

  5. Good luck - you'll be wanting a new engine at some stage.

Oh, and the engine is different in the Mondeo - the Probe however
shares the same engine with the MX6... and there are plenty of those
    around with fecked lumps.

  6. Enjoy the head gasket(s) while you can - the 2.5 gets through these on
    a regular basis.
    Relative to a 1.8LX, maybe. ;-)

  11. The S-Max is OK (for MPV values of OK) but I certainly wouldn't use the
word 'awesome' for any of their range.

When we were replacing the Voyager it came down to a choice between the
FR-V or a Ford C-max (similar price points, roughly similar spec
although the FR-V was ahead becuase it was an ex-demo rather than brand
new) and the FR-V won hands down on handling, power delivery, comfort
    and build quality.

And the Honda salesman knew how to sell (unlike the Ford guy).

Champ, I imagine our horizons are so different we're barely on the
same planet. This is the best car I have ever owned, the previous
Mondeo ranks 2nd (rank probably being appropriate here). My ZR-7 is
the newest, smartest, fastest and most expensive (at £1400) bike I've
    ever had.

Anyway, I'm sure my horizons look much more horizontal than your.

Horses for courses, fair enough, but I think Fords are far better than some
people give them credit for. I've driven my Scorpio back to back with quite
a lot of supposedly "Prestige" cars and the 'Scorp is a nicer thing to
drive, uglier, but nice to drive.
I hate almost all Japanese cars, the bikes I don't know enough about.

My perceptions may be coloured by the only Ford I ever owned. It was a
100E which was also the only *car* I've ever owned that rapidly suffered
total engine failure (big ends). A fair few SOCs have passed through my
hands, but that one took the biscuit for shiteness. A few car purchases
ago I visited two showrooms in close proximity. I looked at a Focus and
read all the rave reviews. Still ended up buying a Honda.
The only Honda to ever inhabit our garage is SWMBO's CB250 Nighthawk. It
was ideal for her purposes, but never fired a deep desire in me to buy
an example of the marque for myself.
Does that hold true for their cars?

Comparing a bog-standard small turbo Escort Cosworth to a 1990's Impreza
without any Prodrive gubbins, would you say that the Cossie was
    a) more awesome than the Scooby,
    b) about the same,
    c) less awesome than the Scooby?

Hah. My instructor referred to my CBR600 as "the Ford Mondeo of
motorcycles". I thought he was being a little harsh, but it seems he
    wasn't alone
