There is an underground garage in Pratt (1) street in Camden Town where
there are several 603's parked up all dusty and sad looking, I tried to find
out who'se they were a while ago but I coudn't get any sense out of the
    attendant.

As a nod to the OP, I have a Mondeo, a 155 bhp Titanium X, only had it a
couple of months and I do rather like it.

805 has the same engine.. so it's an air-cooled V8, 4wd, torsion bar
suspended truck.. Much sillier than a 603.

Not much at the moment, it's in a lock up garage near Liberec. Gonna head
over there sometime around xmas and get it road legal, it'll probably stay
in Czech until next summer though, then it's gonna be the wheels for a trip
around the mountains of Bohemia, on to Slovakia and then see where we end
    up.
    Everything Tatra is bonkers.

  5. Indeed not.

In the same way that a Gixxer Thou is the chavved-up Impreza of the bike
world, and some indeterminate Italian scooter with a Git Kit is the
    Vauxhall Nova.

Any modern BMW four is, well, the BMW - bought by people who think
they're buying a smooth, sleek, performance machine. An MV Agusta is the
Maserati - bought by people who want to be "different", but who don't
realise that they can buy more performance, looks and exclusivity
    elsewhere.

Varaderos and -Stroms are, of course, the ubiquitous Tonka Toy 4x4s,
whereas a BMW RGS is a Range Rover. Triumph Tigers are the equivalent of
Suzuki Vitaras - generally in horrible colours and just a bit gay.

Any hot hatch has its direct equivalent in the crop of sports 600s.

    Any more ideas, anyone?

Speedgazebo () gurgled happily, sounding much like
    they were saying :
They've been there for YEARS. I had a poke around 'em, somewhen around
2000, and they were a foot thick in dust then. Spoke to the manager of the
car park who wouldn't give any more details, but the black one had been
driven in, the red and cream one trailered, and that the parking spaces are
paid for in full regularly. I asked them to pass a letter to the owner of
them, and they said they would - never got a reply.

I've heard that somebody else did manage to speak to the owner - who might
consider selling 'em, but thought they were worth about twenty grand
    each...

Since (Second hand) Maseratis are *kind* of on my horizon in the 10 year
plan, what would you suggest as an alternative? I'm right there with
the with performance, I like the looks, but where would you find
exlusivity and 'difference' at a ~20k price point?
Personally I'd make some kind of loose Triumph : Jag (possibly Rover)
comparison. For which I should probably shoot myself.

    <**** me, I'm biting again>

The vast majority of MV owners I know (which is a lot) bought them for
a combination of the looks & the history. There may be better looking
bikes around now, but nothing else scratches that itch we had as little
oikes staring at the MV posters stuck on our bedroom walls.

As for performance, the 750 Senna was the most powerful 750 around at
the time (& still is afaik) & regularly cited in tests as the best
handling road bike ever made, & the 312 is officially the fastest
production bike you can buy, & winner of this year's Mastertest. So
it's not like people are buying a sub-standard bike just for the
    looks/name.
I'd say Ducatis are more like Maseratis - used to be gorgeous if
somewhat temperemental & under-performing, then went through a few
    years of extreme ugliness & unreliabilty (999/Multistrada = '80s
Maseratis), then started to come out the other side following change of
    ownership & large cash injections.

  19. History? Totally different company. It's like saying you're buying a
Triumph Street Triple for the history. The history goes back a few
    years.
    They are nice-looking.
Heh. I think that's probably fair.

    In communiqué
    <1i5i1lo.18s1mf6ysw8r4N%>, The
This car marque = bike marque was discussed on euro-moto some years ago
but only in a European context. No Japanese = European comparisons.

The only suggested equivalent I can remember was Gilera (when still
making proper bikes) = Lancia. Where Piaggio = Fiat etc. The B300 a dog
like a Beta (though not on corrosion grounds). The rally cars = the MX
125 twin GP bike and RC600R (in full 750 desert racer form though
obviously not so successful). The racers (fours, twins and singles )akin
to the D24 and D50 only more successful.

The most obvious difference today being that it looks unlikely that we
will ever see another > 500 cc Gilera badged motorcycle, whereas it
seems you may be able to buy a RH drive Lancia Delta in 2008.
