Software safes

  1. Any one here know anything about these systems? A friend of mine whose
partner died suddenly has discovered that the partner had a been
living something of a double life, most of his activities have been
revealed but on his laptop there is a folder locked with. Beckman (or
Beckerman) software safe, this seems pretty impenetrable without the
password, any suggestions to crack it?

"You can use a password, but with the personal locks, you don't need to
remember difficult codes anymore! Choose your favourite colors, click on a
secret spot in your own pictures, or use personal questions to which only
you will know the answer! Any number of personal locks may be used, and they
can be combined with the password"

or similar, suggests trial and error or looking for a password written down
    are your best bet.

so tell us about these "activities"......

Depending on the password langth/complexity, it may take a while (using
    brute force methods)

Educated guessing would seem to be the way to go, names, birthdays and
    suchlike.

Or tell the police about them and they'll have it cracked in no time.

Unless there's a real need to get int, I'd forget it exists. IME it's
seldom anything that anyone left benefits from.

    YMMV

  7. That gets my vote. Coo, Catman getting all wise and Jedi-like. Did I
just feel the earth tilt on its axis?

  8. Was what I said to her when she told me about it. Given the nature of
what was on the laptop in encoded, I did suggest that she might not
want to go any further, but she seems determined. I do think and hope
that she will realise that theres nothing to be gained by getting more
    upset.

    In communiqué
    Quite.
The only justification might be if the hidden files concerned financial
machinations which might have serious implications for the surviving
    partner.

One assumes porn. In which case, if it's nasty stuff, she should
reformat the disk in short order, just in case.

    In this case yes.

SWMBO had a bad experience with her ex and money matters in the years
before computers. These days the goings on might be almost purely
    'electronic'.

More likely to be unspeakable beastliness rather than a "Girl with the
Dragon Tattoo"[1] financial fiddling scenario though.

[1] though there was a fair amount of beastliness in that

  13. Or simply a bit on the side.

I'd call up the ISP and ask for a complete browsing history going back,
say, one year - they can do that, can't they, for a customer?

Might be useful to ask for a similar archive of 'sent to' email
addresses, if that can be obtained.

If that flags up some possible financial or property/whatever worries,
then I'd go deeper. If it looks like a bit on the side, then it's her
call to ignore or go further. If it looks illegal (KP or whatever) then
it might be a matter for Plod.

  14. I'd call Plod, because coupled with browser history from the ISP, they
might nail a gang/ring and put a stop to something ongoing.

If there is something deeply nasty going on, and someone else rumbles
it, and the trail leads back to her ex, and it is discovered she wiped
it, she could be on the end of some nasty questioning.

All a bit conjectural, though, I know.

I'd follow the line suggested by the others. If there's a possibilty
it might be illegal porn, she should turn it over to the police. If
it's dodgy, she'll have done the right thing. If not, then at least
the police will have cracked the code for her for free in case it's
    money to be tracked down,

Don't be fooled that Plod can/will crack it.
They can do basic stuff, but it's expensive and they only do it in extremis.
Get up to PGP levels and they are fecked.

Same goes for deep inspection data recovery. It will need to be an Operation
Ore or murder to justify the time/cost
