If they keep it, they have to keep it for quite some time. The trick is
    to not keep any.

I used to help run an ISP and one day plod turned up at the office
asking what kind of logs we kept on our web proxies. Quickly realising
what kind of arse-ache and expense this could lead to, "None from now
    on" was the answer.

Probably require a court order due to the Data Protection Act.

    You think?

Poking around somebody elses computer without passwords or permission
could easily fall under the computer misuse act, whereas wiping it and
putting a clean install of applications would simply be a case of
following the widely accepted best practice of preparing a secondhand
    machine for re-use.

Hmm, depending on the person in question's partner's will (or not) the
laptop may be theirs fairly soon. Perhaps they should wait until probate
or letters of administration have been granted. A very *nice* point of
law could come up indeed. Can you leave data to someone else, or more to
the point without specific instructions that it shouldn't be, what
should become of it after a person's death?

    Is the correct answer.
This is what ISP's have been trying to resist, a vast collection of ever
    expanding log files.
Obviously some of the Retail ISP's do already keep certain logs.
I don't want my ISP keeping a damn thing TBH

  10. In which case pass it straight to plod. I am no expert in these matters
but from what I have been told to think by My BBC these types operate in
clandestine secret gangs and there is at least 20 of them in your street.
They need catching and they need castrating, get it done quick and it gets
    cheaper.

  14. The activities are nothing, as far as we know so far, illegal, it
seems that the bloke was getting into a pretty heavy swinging scene,
he left all sorts of photos and videos on the laptop showing him
engaged in just about every sort of activity imaginable, all with
consensual participants of both sexes, given the apparent ages of the
other participants, he had no interest in young people.
What has really pissed my friend off is that she thought they were
having an exclusive relationship and he showed no sign of any other
activity. There was no financial connection between them so that's not
    a problem.

    In communiqué
Wipe it then - no doubts.

I'm a amused that so many people think plod *could* crack any (sensible)
codes. Let alone bother (unknown circumstances notwithstanding,
    probable cause etc)
