If you're relying on the technical ability of the police I'd fear
you'd be in for a flipping long wait.

Plod wouldn't do it for themselves but if they really needed to get
past the code they'd splash the few grand needed to get people in who
    do it all the time.

seems that the bloke was getting into a pretty heavy swinging scene,
he left all sorts of photos and videos on the laptop showing him
engaged in just about every sort of activity imaginable, all with
    consensual participants of both sexes,

    Same species? Bah...

You friend should get herself to an STD clinic soonest, would be my
    advice

I dunno. A brute force password cracker using the 96 characters
quoted in the link earlier wouldn't be that hard to write at all. All
you need then is hardware and time...

According to that link my usual (reasonably strong) password could be
brute forced in about 10 days on a decent workstation. I'd use a
stronger one, but frankly, strong passwords are enough of a pain to
type on touchscreen phones without making them any harder.

Brute force the password and then let the encryption software take
care of decrypting. Only need to force decryption when you don't know
    or don't have the software.

Never going to happen unless there's a *really* good reason.

Is this a joke or have I been whooshed? A unix distributed job scheduler
    doesn't seem very relevant.
Anyone found this Beck[er]man software on the web?

I'm currently working on a Joomla CMS site to re-launch the Gilera
Network[1] (yes there are other old farts that still have Nordwests etc.
and some younger folk just getting their hands on them and in need of
good information, not forum fuckwit guesswork). The waybackmachine on
www.archive.org is an amazing if slightly scary resource.

[1] BTW, spare me the all owners club members are tossers posts. I've
    heard them all before.

One of my Svensk pals is a Plod Computer Forensics dude and he's fucking
shit hot at getting locked down/hidden away/disguised stuff out of
computers, so they're not all numpties.

There's pretty much no way of beating properly implemented modern
encryption until we get quantum computers. Of course access to the key
ring and users who choose simple passwords changes the odds a lot.
