Sucking his keyboard for inspiration, Nige typed:

Commiserations. 1914 vintage like my late Father. He learned to drive in
a truck, in the desert near Port Said. Which probably explained his
    driving style in later years.

He wasn't French, by any chance? Or Italian, from Naples?

Last week in Ravenna, I met an 81 year old who had lived through
Fascism, managed not to fight for it and survived Allied bombing, who
told me about his mother who had been an anti-Fascist as soon as there
was Fascism to be anti. You're right: it is some generation.

    In communiqué <>, Cab
Far less competent, but with a similar degree of brio at times.
He used to greatly admire the skill with which taxi and hired car
drivers in the places he visited in Latin America and Africa (including
former French colonies) could finely judge the gaps in traffic and the
movements of pedestrians (so long as they stuck to their speed and
    direction).

He wouldn't buy a French car on principle though. He was really dismayed
when I told him that his Volvo 343 had a Renault engine.
