Sold some bike pix!

  1. Forgive me, sin of pride, and all that, but I'm trying to extend my
repertoire (as it were) by bike photography, and I managed to get three
pix of mine from the Spa Classic Weekend in July into Classic Bike.

And they used one as the lead pic for the spread.

And the payment authorisation has come through, and, well, it's a start.

Another 15 or so jobs like that and I'll have paid for the Nikon kit I
    bought :-/

No, seriously, I'm just chuffed. I've managed to sell a pic or two
before on their own merits, and obviously pix to illustrate an article,
but three pix on their own, with no accompanying text: I'm a very happy
    bunny.

    Coo. Well done.

I know a number of folk who thought that they could make a living out
of photography. Thinking was as far as it got though. I just look at
pbase.com now and then and realise I am totally crap.

  3. Well done that OG. It's a great feeling being paid for that - nice to
know that something you've done strikes a chord to the extent that it's
    worth folding.

Well done. I must say I thought the ones that I saw that you posted
    here were really excellent.

My friend H that I'm staying with in France has got back into
photography with a digital SLR, and is a member of a thriving (so it
seems) forum community run by Digital Camera magazine
(www.dcmag.co.uk). They have a weekly competition, voted on by
members (where the winner sets the next comp theme) which he's one a
couple of times. With the help of a long lens he's produced some
truly amazing street scenes (old people, street musicians, etc).

I hope for his sake that there's not some little copyright assignment
clause in subscription to that forum. Subscribers to Visordown, for
example, automatically assign the rights of anything they post there
    to TWO magazine.

One appeal of pix for me is that they continue to be an earner, from
the copyright POV. A shot I took at the 1998 Bol has been used once in
Bike and once in PB, and may yet be used again by Bike, and I collect
    every time.

It was looking at albums like this http://www.pbase.com/francist that
made me realise how rubbish I am. I should try harder though. I used to
follow this guy's pics when they suddenly stopped being added. I found
out much later that he had died.

To be honest, I'm not that good with a camera, but I think I have an
eye for a shot that'll sell. The pic CB used of the two-stroke racers
half-hidden in a pall of smoke is a good example: technically, not a
great shot, but it told a story.

OTOH, they used the pic of the old Kawasaki endurance racer very
small, and technically that *was* a good shot: well-framed, well-
exposed, pin-sharp, well-panned, and just nice. It could have been
    used far bigger.

OTOOH (three hands?) there are loads of loads of shots of old racing
bikes out there, so it was just one of a crowd. Which, now I think
about it, reinforces what I just said about a sellable picture. The
two-strokes told a better story, so they used it big.

I'm quite fond of them, especially when they bring you coffee and

  16. I'm not too sure I want to go back and read RWE, since I re-read RW
fairly recently after a gap of 20 years and it just didn't do anything
for me like it did first time round. In re-reading it, I was painfully
aware of the shortcomings and I've got other authors I know are worth
following up on and filling in the blanks of. Jack Vance, for one.

It's just occured to me that you'd need Different Engineers to maintain a
    Difference Engine.
