If my friend had a bike that isn't sorned and was last used in about
1999, what's going to happen when I *cough* he tries to tax it?

Well, in fact I tried at the PO but they said contact the DVLA, as
    they need a "new V5".

If I have to pay the road tax back to 1999, Ill be a bit cheesed off.

    Cheers

IIRC nothing. Somewhere on the DVLA site there is a statement about
    the cut-off date.

"When SORN is not needed ... your vehicle was last taxed before 31 January
    1998"

    So you should be okay.

Easiest thing to do is apply for a new style V5 in *your* name. State that
you have inherited the bike and that the former owner has emigrated/died. I
doubt they will give a **** and be happy to start receiving revenue from a
    previously dormant source.

There's a hint in there about ownership...

    @amstwist00:

well, for the plan to work, Nick will need to commit suicide, emigrate or
just fucking lie. It's not like the notion of an i-owner is a new idea
    around here.

If I have to pay the backdated road tax, I'll consider all of those
    options :)
