Although in Cheltenham it seemed to be some sort of pink/blue box
    thing.

I only heard of that recently when it came up in an interview of someone
living in Soho at the end of WWII. All very bizarre!

I didn't even spot the typo and parsed it as attended.

I also knew the meaning of the flag.

    As everyone seems to say.
Yebbut, I don't think I could look at a bar and say "that's a gay
bar". To b honest I might not even notice when I was in one. And
even if I did, I very much doubt I'd make the connection to a rainbow.

In all fairness, your father's profession would bring him into contact
with a wide variety of the populace, and he's bound to have heard
somewhere along the lines about this sort of thing.

It's very much a bee-in-a-bonnet thing amongst Fundies in the
    States.[1]

ISTR there being a reference in a South Park, sometime since.

I hate to admit it, but I also wouldn't have had a clue what it meant.
If I even noticed it, and also probably wouldn't have noticed that the
    people inside were gay either.

I remember when I met Paul C wondering what the clues were that he was
gay (he had 'come out' to the NG by then - but I wouldn't have spotted it.

I googled, guessed it was a typo, googled some more & now know what it
means. I had no idea before.

All in good time. It's on my PC and I was using the monitor on that to
    watch the F1 earlier.
