Spada gearbox query

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by Richard Lindner, Feb 21, 2005.

  1. Hi - am off to look at a '89 Spada on Wednesday to replace my CBX which
Redwing tells me is unrepairable after being bashed up the arse a week
or so ago. However am a bit puzzled - the Spada owner tells me that the
bike has a 5 speed transmission, but everything I've read indicates that
all Spada's (in fact all VT250's) had 6 speed boxes. Does anyone know
    differently?

The current owner bought the Spada 3 years ago from Sumoto which
probably isn't a problem for me now if it's in OK shape. But it'd be
good to know if they've done something dodgy to this bike.

    Thanks,

    Richard

Spada definitely has a 5 speed gear box. How do I know? I just got
off mine about 5 minutes ago.

  5. My Spada definitely had a 6 speed box, and so did my brothers VT250. The
new VTR250s (the Monster clones) only have a 5 speed box, and its not
completely unlikely that someone killed the original motor and put a
motor/gearbox out of a VTR250 into the Spada...

If you've got a 5 speed Spada, I'd be checking the engine numbers match
    the rego...

big (oh, and remember, 6 gears = 5 changes... remember to count 1st...)

Made me all paranoid and I had to go check.

And yep, silly old me miscounted. It's a 6 speed.

What you get for only commuting and not having to go past 4th.

  11. Yeah - wondered that. Or maybe some of the Jap Spadas indeed had 5 speed
boxes?? - who knows!! Rang Sumoto today (not that I'd even buy an
oilplug washer from them) and what they have there now are all 6 speeds
    - although clearly some people are riding 5 speeds. Don't really care
too much (not a racer) but would be curious to find out what the gig is here

More of only commuting on the spada for the last 2 years and not having
to go past 4th. Though I should know my bike better.
