Thanks to discovering the joys of content management systems (thanks DNC - Wordpress was ideal for my community volunteer assignment) I have been working on a new web site for 'the chateau'. Observant readers may have seen a link slip out here in the occasional post when I forget to choose the right sig. By courtesy of Joomla (thanks to Simon and others for their input) I now have something much better. Still under development and needs a lot of tweaking (particularly the photo layouts), but it's reasonably functional already, including an availability display. Anyone interested will find a status post on my Facebook page with a link. Should peeps wish to have a look I will post a direct link here, but I don't want to attract the wrath of Auvache. -- +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Pete Fisher at Home: | | Voxan Roadster Yamaha WR250Z/Supermoto "Old Gimmer's Hillclimber" | | Gilera GFR * 2 Moto Morini 2C/375 Morini 350 "Forgotten Error" | +-------------------------------------------------------------------+

Yep! And in the interests of fairness, I'll add http://www.lanoyeraierocamadour.com/ and http://www.lotvalleyenduro.com/Accommodation.html P.S. including commercial URLs in your sig has always been OK for regulars[1] afaik. [1] And probably non-regulars as long as publishing the sig isn't their only reason for posting.
A good start and, as you say, a reasonably functional site. And the joy of Joomla is the templating system. Not only are there loads of free ones out there but editing and changing them is a doddle too if you know a little about html and CSS. You can try other looks at the click of a button. There are also loads of image gallery components that are worth looking at to polish the photo display. One thing to bear in mind is that Joomla is a huge target for hackers so you need to keep it updated to the latest version. It's easy to do but, as I suspect, you have changed a default template these sometimes get updated and you can lose your customization. Best way round this is to copy the template and give it a new name. Just copy the entire directory of the appropriate template and give it a name of your own. Look in the directory for the templateDetails.xml file. Edit this file to change the name to your new one. You can then choose that template from the template manager.
Some sort of scam IMHO. Get you down there and comfortable THEN tell you what the weekly rates are ;o)
That's a half baked site if ever I saw one ;-) Contact details might be a good start so at least someone could get in touch with you to ask the rates and availabilty for the summer. Just a thought.
I've only glanced at the extensions so far. The availability one was an interesting challenge. Free, whereas a lot are commercial, but needed a bit of hacking because the mySQL table structure didn't work with my version of SQL. Created a table using PHPAdmin with the same fields but compatible with my version and it worked. Plus having to fiddle with language files that seemed not to have had some strings set up correctly in the right files. What fun! I must look at the photo gallery offerings. Also need to embed a Google Map properly. Just switching of WYSIWYG article editing temporarily seems to be the simple way. I haven't edited the template file by hand, but I think some learning curve changes to the structure may have had the same effect. Thanks for the tip, as well as making a backup of the whole shooting match naturally. -- +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Pete Fisher at Home: | | Voxan Roadster Yamaha WR250Z/Supermoto "Old Gimmer's Hillclimber" | | Gilera GFR * 2 Moto Morini 2C/375 Morini 350 "Forgotten Error" | +-------------------------------------------------------------------+
With the aid of extra pills from the quack yesterday for the hypertension, yes. Unfair? I thought you were a hunter down and eliminator of spam in any form. Anyway, this is UKRM, what's fair got to do with it? -- +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Pete Fisher at Home: | | Voxan Roadster Yamaha WR250Z/Supermoto "Old Gimmer's Hillclimber" | | Gilera GFR * 2 Moto Morini 2C/375 Morini 350 "Forgotten Error" | +-------------------------------------------------------------------+
I tried Joomla a few weeks ago, but switched to WordPress as the former was like a 'gas factory' as we say.
As I said above, I am using Wordpress, as an unpaid volunteer, to set up a site for a community organisation. Helps to keep my brain active now I don't go to 'work' two days a week. When I did the requirements analysis with them a couple of weeks ago it was clear that the ability for the organisers to quickly add content themselves was important. The 'Quick Post' feature in Worpress fits the bill excellently. Take a bit of tuning to loose the 'blog' feel but they are very happy with the reults so far. I used that for my site partly to extend my knowledge of more complex, but free, CMS. Heh, I can put it on my old gimmer looking for a bit of light IT work CV! It offers great potential, particularly when you look at the extensions available, but as you say, a higher level of complexity. I've already fallen for one of the major 'gotchas'. Fortunately if you google Joomla + your problem you pretty soon find useful info, -- +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Pete Fisher at Home: | | Voxan Roadster Yamaha WR250Z/Supermoto "Old Gimmer's Hillclimber" | | Gilera GFR * 2 Moto Morini 2C/375 Morini 350 "Forgotten Error" | +-------------------------------------------------------------------+

Here have some of these. â Ҫ ҫ ğ ı İ î Ö ö Ş ş Ü ü Ҫalış The whole irony of going to work for a holiday is a bit much for me. However it is rather nice area.
I can recommend JCE as the best editor to use. It is way better than the standard one and can be configured to let you do the Google map stuff without having to turn it off. The JCE extended image manager is excellent although I think that may be an extra you have to pay for. You'll also fine loads of Google map modules and plugins so you don't need to hard code it if you don't want to.

Thanks for that I'll have a look. For this site I don't need anything more fancy than a couple of embedded 'My Maps'. I do my Google Maps API and KML tinkering on another domain. -- +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Pete Fisher at Home: | | Voxan Roadster Yamaha WR250Z/Supermoto "Old Gimmer's Hillclimber" | | Gilera GFR * 2 Moto Morini 2C/375 Morini 350 "Forgotten Error" | +-------------------------------------------------------------------+
If yoy can bear to sign up for a Google account then get sticking those virtual pins in or creating routes. The map must be public, but not necessarily 'listed'. You can share the map with other people for adding content. http://maps.google.co.uk/support/bin/static.py?page=guide.cs&guide=21670&topic=21676&answer=144347 -- +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Pete Fisher at Home: | | Voxan Roadster Yamaha WR250Z/Supermoto "Old Gimmer's Hillclimber" | | Gilera GFR * 2 Moto Morini 2C/375 Morini 350 "Forgotten Error" | +-------------------------------------------------------------------+
Ta muchly. My initial prejudices concerning Joomla! are being confirmed.. for example, there's a 'banner' on the front page of the site, and I'm fucked if I can find where it's defined, so I can get rid of it.
You have to replace the default mw_joomla_logo.png banner with a .PNG of your choice if using the rhuk_milkyway template. Or possibly edit the template.css to not reference it at all. Beware that to change the size gets tricky if you want it larger (interferes with the menu graphics). Otherwise you might consider starting from scratch with no template, but I suspect you need to be competent in css to do that. div#logo { position: absolute; left: 0; top: 0; float: left; width: 700px; height: 90px; background: url(../images/mw_joomla_logo.png) 0 0 no-repeat; margin-left: 327px; margin-top: 20px; } Tempus fugit, non autem memoria - oh hang on. -- +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Pete Fisher at Home: | | Voxan Roadster Yamaha WR250Z/Supermoto "Old Gimmer's Hillclimber" | | Gilera GFR * 2 Moto Morini 2C/375 Morini 350 "Forgotten Error" | +-------------------------------------------------------------------+
