I'm thinking of some Halfords Pro stuff (I have one of their small
socket sets, which is very good) but another name recommended to me,
which is about the same price, is Teng. Any (informed?) opinions?

Or just buy it off their website? Even Halfrauds'd find it difficult to
    cock that up, surely?

  4. That's exactly what I was looking at, except I'm positive it was
marked at just over 70 quid. I was also looking at this socket set:
    http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/...6863_crumb_33958-76859_parentcategoryrn_76863

I'm going to go back today and try again - I've just used their
reserve-and-collect option on the webshite and I'll see if the bloke
    with the key is in.

I was quite patient yesterday and spent a lovely 45 minutes there -
the only downside is that could have got VERY expensive while standing
    in the tool section.

I've never had issues with Teng and Andy tends to use my teng set
rather than wander to his van so it cant be that bad.

If it has the Bonwick mark of quality, it'll do me fine.

I don't know why you're bothering to explain this to him. If someone's
too stupid to understand that young children aren't trusted with the
keys to expensive tools and can't be arsed to go back another day so
they can buy decent kit at a reasonable price then they can **** off.

Nothing wrong with Teng, but as there are likely to be more Halfords shops
around than shops that supply Teng, buying from where you can readily return
stuff if it breaks is a major plus point (IMO)

Working nightshift at a nuclear power station, dayshift making no
progress, got to change hotel in the middle of a 12 night rotation and
been woken after 4 hours sleep...

My tolerance threshold is very low when it comes to fucking idiots. I
find myself wondering why someone wants good tools for the occasional
bit of service work on a bike, if they're good enough to take on the
major jobs then they should already know which tools are decent and
    which are crap.

  13. Ouch - sorry I've pissed you off by being surprised that a store did
    not want my money.

Maybe it's because I come from a 3rd world country, but it just
surprises me when I walk into a store in London and find that no-one
there has permission to sell me stuff that they have in the cupboard.

  14. I'm absolutely not good enough to take on the major jobs, but if I
don't try and learn, I never will be. Spannering on a bike can't be
too much harder than any of the other things I've learned by doing in
life, and if it is, at least I can say I've made the effort and tried.
The only person going to get hurt by this is me if I **** my bike up.
And you apparently, although I still can't see how or why.

As for wanting good tools, I don't like buying stuff twice. I bought a
socket set 6 years ago that sees semi-regular use and is still in the
condition it was in when I bought it. I buy tools once with the idea
that they should last at least 10 years. I've learned this the hard
way over time. Often it's cheaper to pay twice the value for one good
set of gear than it is to buy something that costs half that - because
the good kit will last you three times as long.

  15. You'd think so, but you'd be mostly wrong. To be fair, it was the
reserve and collect thing, but that is part of their online store.

I ordered everything I wanted this morning before noon, called to make
sure they had it all at around 15:00, drove to Barking to get there
for 16:30 only to find that nothing had been picked from the shelves
yet and they didn't have half of the stuff that they had confirmed
having set aside for me. Oh, and the manager's response when I
explained that his staff had told me they had everything? "It's got
nothing to do with me mate, it's the systems."

There's useless, and then there's Halfords.

I know, I know - someone will be along shortly to yell at me for not
having enough patience to try and give my money to someone for a third
time, but I'm bored with spending my afternoons down the shops so I'm
going to give this interweb thingy a try.

You probably won't get anywhere, but you can have some fun.
