Cameras that is, trundling along the M1 yesterday it occurred to me that as
they're forward facing they cannot read the plates on bikes, so therefore
cannot do the average speed thing that they do to cars etc?

Am I missing something or is it ok to <cough> proceed on a bike in a SPECS
    area?

You won't be picked up by the average speed cameras, no. Probably best
not to take the piss too much though.

Yes. As long as there are no other scameras/unmarked plod/helicopters
    etc. around.

It's more fun to let your speed creep up and drag a few
of the cars along with you to see if you can get them
    a ticket.

I've quite happily proceeded through the ones around Luton at a swift
    pace with no comeback.

As someone else said though, take the piss and they might pay you more
    attention

    antonye scribbled:
In every SPECS zone I've driven through a good 80% of the muppets speed
between cameras and slow down as they pass them.

How fucking difficult is it to figure it out?

there again, they must know something I don't otherwise they'd all be
    banned by now?

I wonder if they're susceptible to a sql injection attack.

I wasn't sure if it took pictures of every vehicle and image processed
them to extract the numberplate. In which case, if all the images were
retained, they could potentially be used to bother you with (although I
would doubt they could make a conviction stick solely based on the
    images with no reg)

They do take whole pictures then process them to recognise a number
plate and then process that area to extract the reg no.

2 x Vehicle specific pics are saved along with all data.

Its a doddle to configure them to read rear number plates (although
number plate recognition is less accurate).

(info valid in 1999 when I worked for Monitron, so, wibbleflipdoo)

Obviously they can't read your plate, but more than that, they can't tell
when you change lanes, so if you're in the car and go into an average speed
check area in lane 1, go under the first camera, then change lanes, go like
**** and exit the area in the 2nd lane. You WILL NOT get "done" coz they
    just "can't"[1]

    [1] At the moment.

Anyone know if it's true that they can't cope with the cage changing
lanes, or is that just an urban myth? I don't fancy relying on it.

What annoys me more than are those who block all 3 lanes travelling at
45 when my sat-nav tells me I can go at least another 5mph faster
    without fear of prosecution.

  13. Reported in a national paper some time last year - some bloke on a red
R1100x got done for giving a nice V sign while averaging of lots of
MPH. The DVLA was checked for bikes matching the description in the
area and came up with 3, with each being investigated, matching the
guy's jacket and lid, etc. The pic of the incident accompanying the
story was rather high-res - you could make out most of the chap's face
    clearly enough.

Having said that, I have gone past the M1 ones with a V sign flying a
few times before I read that, except I wasn't speeding.

ITYF that was a forward facing speed camera (truvello) and not a specs
    camera
    [/QUOTE]
And he'd been through it about 50,000 times

    asking for it really

So the head of roads policing for the ACPO & South Yorkshire's Chief
Constable both say it's dangerous to unnecessarily change lanes on a
motorway. I shall remember that if I ever get tugged for undertaking a
middle-lane fuckwit, rather than changing lanes four times to get past
    them.

The fact that I've still got a clean license after regularly leathering the
crap out of the car when I go through the same ASC area week in, week out.
One of my pal's lives in Stockport and for about 18 months there were
roadworks on the M60 with ASC mounted on every bridge. I got totally pissed
off doing 50 (or less) on a road that could be ridden/driven at 100 with no
problem so I gave it a go. Go into the area in lane one, pop out in lane 2
    or 3 and **** 'em.

I was a bit concerned when I first heard about this, but yeah, I know it
    does now.
Swap lanes, sorted. In fact SPECS camera's were given type approval by the
Home Office in 1999, but only for "one lane use", so you'd even have an
argument in law if anyone decided to take the piss. Not that they will, coz
you'll only show up on one camera and they can't work **** all out with just
    one picture.
    ..
****, I've got to go and do something myself now :-(

The only set of cameras I go through atm is at Weatherby, where you
pass (IIRC) four of them. If the pairs are wired consecutively I guess
this plan will work. If, however, Cameras 1 and 3 are paired, ditto 2
and 4, then passing Camera 1 in Lane 1, Camera 2 in Lane 2, Camera 3
in Lane 1 and Camera 4 in Lane 2 would net me two tickets and possibly
    6 points.

I've no doubt they can be set to keep pictures of all vehicles,
regardless of being able to find/read a plate or not.

So if you take the piss regularily on the same set of SPECS cameras
they could do just that, and then match them up manually, hand to plod,
    etc, etc.

It was definitely an urban myth.

Don't know about current systems, but I can't see any reason for the
manufacturers to take that ability *out* of a system.

Not getting approval for it, and then it being disabled due to
non-approval is another matter altogether though.
