I think you'd somehow have to "flag" yourself and seeing as the camera's
don't see you if you change lanes, why would they want to keep a picture of
you and send a man out to identify you?

Doing 120 in a 50 limit would do this quite nicely I'd have thought.
    Don't rely on that.

Each camera can optically cover "x" metres width of road.

When they set them up they tell the computer where the lanes are -
think of someone virtually drawing the lane dividers on the video image.

This is purely so the computer can 'tag' the photo with the lane number.

There's normally 1 camera with 2 IR lamps either side of it at each
checkpoint, 2 of these for > 3 lanes (it seems to be).

Car goes past first post (in any lane, the computer doesn't care),
computer recognises movement, categorises it (size of vehicle - helps
to cut down the areas of moving image to scan for number plate sized
areas), finds plate, does OCR, saves image + reg no + other data.

Ditto second post, albeit rather than saving the image straight off it
tries to match the reg no. If it can it works out speed. If speeding,
both are saved, if not, first one is deleted. It didn't care if you've
    changed lanes.

When I worked for Monitron on this stuff it was in very early days,
most of the ACPO (?) acceptance tests didn't exist, things were just
thought up of on the spot (mostly to do with anti tamper so images
could be proven to be untampered so they could be used as evidence in
    court).

I know the software/hardware can do it, I guess from your experience
that either cars are only tracked in one lane, or more likely (what
speeds do you do, and whats the limit?) these things are set to 25% or
    more over the limit.

Why did they nick that biker who flicked the Vs at a Truvello hundreds
    of times?

I know exactly what the software and hardware was capable of in 1999.

    It can only have improved.

    Was/is it?
Did they take it out, or was it never *in* in the first place. SPECS aren't
type approved for anything other than single lane monitoring.
The result is the same though. Change lanes and you're not seen.

Ok. How would they know? They're AVERAGE speed camera's we're talking about
here so you'd have to go through at least two for ANY average to be
calculated. As the 2nd camera and the first camera are pointing at two
different lanes and the SPECS can only be used for single lane checks, there
    IS no average.
I don't need to, I KNOW it works because on the M60 in the Stockport area, I
never gave them a second thought and drove (with a front number plate)
through the checking area as quickly as I wanted to and FAR too many times
to remember without getting any sort of ticket/warning/NIP, so I've still
    got a pristine clean license.

I *have* seen these things y'know.
It may not matter to the camera, but it matters to whatever "higher
authority" allows them to be used and HOW they're to be used. Currently,
they're not approved for multi lane checking.
I suspect that a 50mph limit being totally disregarded to the point that
100mph+ is showing on the speedo comes under the category "A little over the
    trigger point"
Because he was a naughty boy with attitude? Who really gives a **** why? The
camera was an "on the spot" speed cam, not an average speed cam so the
system was triggered to flag him because right at that moment, they KNEW he
was speeding. It takes *two* SPECS in an average speed check area to reach
the conclusion that anyone is speeding and it's at THAT point the speeder
will be flagged. How many times have you flicked the V's at a trevello and
not had plod knocking at your door?

Nice, but all ^^that^^ meant **** all to me coz I couldn't see anything that
indicated an average speed check area or any indication that you can now be
caught even if you change lanes.

Thats cause its from the source for red light and normal speed cameras.

I can't find the specs stuff.

I reiterate. You can't be "done" in an average speed check area with SPEC
cams if you change lanes part way through.

I don't see why not. I would have thought one of the cameras tell the
single computer that car x entered speed check area at time y and then
car x leaves speed check area at time z - it doesn't matter to the single
computer which camera reports the number plate and it issues ticket as
    appropriate.

    I don't understand this.

Ok, have it your way. Stick to the speed limit, stay in your chosen lane and
leave all the others open for those who can't be arsed travelling at 40mph
for 10 miles when they can happily **** off up the road at whatever speed
they want by changing lanes after entering the ASC area.
