I had an eye test today & I need reading glasses.

It seems High St prices for spectacles are set by Dick Turpin.

specsonthenet in Cardiff were recommended on here in 2006/7. Are they still
recommended? The whinging cunts on MSE only report bad stuff. As their
premises are very close to my Uni building I can easily do some problem
solving if it all goes wrong.

Any alternatives? The Chinese mob? What are their turnaround times like?

I'm not sure they would do - the main problem is an astigmatism in the left
eye so the 'scrip for each lens is quite different

In that case, no. Suitable only for just plain long sighted old gimmers.
I have three pairs in total as they seem to have an ability to beam
themselves to unknown locations for a while. I'm only up to 2.00
dioptres, so some margin for escalation yet.

OTOH a good firm will look after your eyes, do regular retinal
mapping, pressure tests and so on. I suppose it depends on how much
    you value your eyesight.

the only optician in Chepstow where I'm currently based is Specsavers, so
that rules out "good firm". I used them for the eye test as I expect their
actual opticians are competent. It's the rest of the operation I don't care
    for.

I have used an excellent optician in a suburb of Cardiff in the past. I'd
use him again but I don't have the time to get there for a test and then go
    back to collect the specs.

Yes but you can just get an eye test then go elsewhere for the glasses. I
used to use Specsavers but they excelled themselves in cuntedness last time
so I took my trade elsewhere.

What has the eye test got to do with buying spectacles? I'll always
get my eye test done at a decent optician, and am happy to pay the
going rate. But when the they want to charge double the cost of the
same lenses and frames online, with the same kind of lead-time, then
they're simply not going to get my business.

I last used glasses direct, who were ok but I'm not sure I can be
bothered with ordering via the web without trying on.. Noticed the
other day that surprisingly Asda are doing designer frames + lenses
with anti scratch / uv / refelction all inc for £65, might give them a
    go next time.

    Call/email Sarah at http://www.sgoeyecare.co.uk/ & tell her I sent
you. No guarantees of plenty cheapness but you won't get ripped off.

Been using them for many years now - never had a problem with the
quality of their work. Delivery usually within 10-14 days.

well, specs on the net failed at the payment stage - mismatched certificate
& a broken link to google checkout. Gone tits-up I guess.

Glasses Direct don't seem to be any cheaper than Asda.

yes, saw them mentioned in the 2006/7 thread so I was already there
just placed an order for 2 pairs of reading glasses - nobody will see me
wearing them as I will only use them when doing college stuff at home. I
can have one upstairs in the office and one in the lounge with the
netbook for under £28 delivered. That includes anti-glare coating: some
UK outfits want that much just to coat one set of lenses.

I tried to support a UK based mail order firm but the one in Cardiff has
a fucked website and the others seem to be charging High St prices. So
    **** 'em.

I've got seriously fucked up vision - long sighted in both eyes, one
considerably more than the other, and I suffer with quite severe double
vision after my stroke which was borderline requiring surgery to
    correct.

Getting my specs right is a nightmare because of the difficulties I
have on focussing with binocular effect on anything near or far.
Bedford Specsavers are the only opticians who take the time and trouble
to get my difficult prescription correct and have the know-how to get
the right orientation of the lenses in the frames to suit my needs[1].
I've used them three or four times over the years for my distance and
reading specs and they've never let me down. When I first got
discharged by the Eye Clinic with my final prescription I tried two
others and they both failed, quite miserably.

[1] This is crucial as one eye settles lower than the other and to one
    side

It's worth remembering that SpecSavers are a franchise operation, so it's
all down the individual franchisee - as well, of course, of the person
you actually get on the day.

I got total above-and-beyond-the-call from the one in Hemel a while back,
so pushed SWMBO in their direction. She got much less impressive service.

I used to use them all the time although the one in Cheltenham did get
the wrong lens material once. The one in Bristol was doing ok until
the last time I went there. They tried to prescribe a compromise
prescription (I'm very short sighted but it's getting better slowly as
I age) between reading and distance. When I got the specs I told them
they were wrong but agreed to try them for a while. It took three
attempts before they would belive that I could only see through a
small fraction of the lens (about 0.5 cm by 1 cm). Then they blamed it
    on a locum optician.

I use the Kendal branch and they've so far given me very good service.
I don't have a problem with paying a couple of hundred quid for a full
examination and two pairs of varifocals because I know that if I
damage my glasses they've got everything on record and will send out
    replacements in the post.

I also know they'll fit properly and the line where the lenses change
has been checked and measured by someone trained to do so and that
doesn't come under the sight test so ordering on line would mean
winging it when it came to that part.
