    *I* made no such assumption.

I just stated that it was a reasonable and normal assumption to make.

    So what?

If you are trying now to say that you were not trolling for the
response you got, then you are claiming to be too stupid to realise
that was the clear implication of what you said.

So which was it? Troll, or stupid?

  5. Is there less of them, or fewer?

He knows I meant "this country".
    [/QUOTE]

    I'm not sure he did.
    Possibly not.
Maybe, but there are four groups in the cross post not dedicated to
motorcycles. I don't know which one he comes from.
But you did say "UK", and there are lots of pedants (including me) in
at least some of those groups ;-)
I will freely admit that I wasn't aware there are no speed limits on
    the IoM, in general.

I thought it was only for a short period each year that they were
removed, and only on certain roads then.

    Probably not.

I wouldn't have. But I was aware that IoM is not part of the UK, so I
would have responded that way anyhow.

Depends on your definition of a "hole" I suppose.

And how pedantic one wants to be :)

But you're not a pedant, you're an argumentative twat who is digging a
sizeable hole in ukrm. If you want to argue pedantry, you're in the
right place, but can you keep the noise down please cos some of us have
got bored with you and want to sleep.

    In your opinion

you need to get out more
Brought out the mindless pedants rather than the speed nazis, though ...

Friend of mine took his company car in for service. Picked it up, drove
around in it for several days before realising that the garage had given him
    back someone else's car.

  12. Ther *are* speed limits. But outside the towns, unless marked to the
contrary, the roads are "no limit".

    Which is nice.

    Gotta be fewer.

  14. I did say "almost". :)

170mph on our A7 has still got to be tricky though...

The driver, who is the one counting the seconds, is at rest in his own
inertial reference frame (if we neglect space-time curvature), so is
measuring proper (invariant) time. So I would say that "PM" is perfectly
    correct ;-)

    Simon, Mar 10, 2006

    Derek Potter Guest

Then you would be wrong :) PM's reply was to the statement that "The
time (and therefore the distance ) is a function of the speed". Since
the initial advice does not say whose time is meant, it is fair enough
to assume the driver's proper time. But in that case the distance is a
function of speed: the road is shorter in the driver's frame of
reference. So PM's "No" is incorrect, if he were to weasel out of the
"time" bit, he gets clobbered by the "distance" bit and vice versa.

Okay, okay, you win. But for a fixed time interval, distance is a function
of speed anyway - I was really only backing up the "two seconds is two
seconds regardless of how fast you are going" comment.

It's a bit of a silly argument anyway - I hardly ever drive at relativistic
speeds, the blue shift makes the traffic lights too confusing ;-)

It's never reasonable for the reader to assume. However making
    assumptions is rather your forte.

FWIW, even in British Isles, it's perfectly possible to drive at 120mph+
on public roads without breaking the law.
