Because if it is complete falsies, then any number check requested by a policeman in a car will tell them that, and you would shortly find yourself with some *very* awkward questions to answer. If they carry out a check, and it returns a valid vehicle matching the one they are following, then you only have a problem if they are going to stop you anyhow.
The message <> Because having no plate or a fictitious one gives away that fact as soon as they get in touch with the DVLA. If you're on (say) a motorway, it could be only minutes before you've got a jam sandwich sniffing your tail. Having one which matches a different but similar vehicle offloads the blame on someone else - who will (it is hoped) be able to provide alibi when they get a letter. F/Us reset to urm.

..... and if you get a pull while sporting a plate belonging to some other vehicle, you will face increasingly hostile questioning and subsequent prosecution that makes being done for speeding look like a wank in the park. -- Dave GS850x2 XS650 SE6a I demand nothing of you except that you amuse me. Simple way round that one , when you have found the bike you wish to clone ask DVLA for the owners details , tell them you have knocked it over or its been in a hit and run and they will quite happily provide you with the information you require for £2.00 When pulled just reel off the other persons details really common in Brum now , plod will do a pnc all details match , they give you your ticket in wrong name and off you go one drawer back is if the cloned bikes owner has any outstanding warrants , then your in shit
*ding* no plate at all isn't even an endorseable offence. Though you do have to pay a vehicle rectification notice (40 quid when I got one) and (if over the age for 'em) get it MOTed.
Why don't you do it then, and report back? You fail to grasp the fact that if you get stopped having deliberately attempted to pervert the course of justice (even if it's just a numberplate) you are in deep shit. It's always been the case and the only reason the cops don't jump on broken/dirty plates from a great height is the likelihood of it being genuine. A moody plate that matches another vehicle the same colour/year/model as yours *and for which you give the other owner's name* isn't just an error at the dealer - it's deliberate and you *will* get reamed. Quite apart from that; if you do it once and get away with it, a local copper will remember you and next time you certainly won't be so lucky. A misplaced digit, broken/muddy plate is so much more believable. -- Dave GS850x2 XS650 SE6a I demand nothing of you except that you amuse me. Remember that you need to know what fractions of a second are between increments.... 70 mS *could* actually be 74.9999 mS if the apparatus works in 5mS steps... or 79.999999 mS if it works in 10mS steps!
There's a really simple way to end this "scheme" - stop speeding. It really is that simple. "waah! waah *sob* *sob*!"
